CULTURE NEWS

  • Silver Belle, Nevada’s first U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, was lit on Christmas Day to honor the state’s gift to the nation. The 53 foot red fir from Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will remain lit until 11 p.m. Eastern through Jan. 1— a Virginia City fourth grader won the contest to light it.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A magnitude 3.3 earthquake hit near Gerlach on Thursday night before 5:30 p.m. just north of Pyramid Lake, and the Nevada Seismological Laboratory reported it is unknown if any damage occurred.  2NEWS
  • Strong winter weather continues to disrupt travel as chain controls remain in effect on I-80 and Tahoe routes with heavy snow and gusty winds affecting safety. Officials advise drivers to slow down and check conditions (especially on mountain roads) before heading out.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chain control requirements affected drivers on Sierra Mountain passes on Christmas Day, and officials advised checking local weather alerts and carrying chains amid icy conditions. Measures were put in place to enhance road safety for holiday travelers.  2NEWS
