- ➤ Silver Belle, Nevada’s first U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree, was lit on Christmas Day to honor the state’s gift to the nation. The 53 foot red fir from Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest will remain lit until 11 p.m. Eastern through Jan. 1— a Virginia City fourth grader won the contest to light it. 2NEWS
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A magnitude 3.3 earthquake hit near Gerlach on Thursday night before 5:30 p.m. just north of Pyramid Lake, and the Nevada Seismological Laboratory reported it is unknown if any damage occurred. 2NEWS
- ➤ Strong winter weather continues to disrupt travel as chain controls remain in effect on I-80 and Tahoe routes with heavy snow and gusty winds affecting safety. Officials advise drivers to slow down and check conditions (especially on mountain roads) before heading out. 2NEWS
