COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities and The Nugget will serve 1,500 free Christmas meals on Dec. 25 at St. Vincent’s Dining Room on Valley Road. Meals, offered from 11 a.m. + 1 p.m. and delivered to local campuses, will include a full holiday menu.  2NEWS
  • Drivers heading west on Mt. Rose Highway for Christmas may face hazardous winter conditions and are advised to delay trips for one extra day & check local road updates.  2NEWS
  • The Winter break Kids Cafe program begins today with free meals available at various Reno locations. Local children and families will receive nutritious meals + community support during the winter break.  2NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists from Nevada are invited by Sparks to submit portfolios for a mural celebrating America’s 250th birthday to be painted at the city’s outdoor amphitheater that holds 250 people. Submissions close Feb. 9 at 11:45 p.m. and winners get $17,000 (for materials and time).  KRNV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Nevada have dropped by an average of seven cents per gallon since last week, a shift that could lower fuel expenses for local drivers.  2NEWS
  • Statistician Nate Silver says Las Vegas tourism is sliding as gaming revenue drops and visitor numbers hit a low since the pandemic, with tougher odds and higher costs curbing the gambling experience— a trend that Reno locals should watch.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Winter weather has led the Nevada Department of Transportation to impose chain controls on I-80 and Mt. Rose Highway to keep travel safe. Drivers (especially in the Sierra area) should plan ahead and check road conditions before traveling.  2NEWS

  • Local officials outlined three levels of chain requirements to help drivers prepare for winter roads. The guidelines were released yesterday to offer clear rules for using chains on vehicles.  2NEWS
  • Teams at the Washoe County Sheriff's Office battled in a festive holiday decorating contest today. The Detectives Division (winning team) won after a close decision (by executive staff) as the office transformed into a vibrant Christmas Village with a Nativity scene and miniature horses.  2NEWS
  • Reno and Plumas County offer several locations to fill sandbags today, so residents should bring their own shovel.  2NEWS

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Northern Nevada shoppers are rushing to local stores to complete holiday lists as Christmas nears. Pet store owner Staci Alonso said buyers are grabbing exclusive toys and pet treats while quick dog washes remain busy despite windy conditions.  2NEWS

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction resumed on a two-story home in Damonte Ranch after a fire in May 2024 left the property unsafe. The city approved a permit on Nov. 13 and work restarted soon after on Fire Poppy Circle, easing neighbor concerns about hazards.  KRNV

  • Jeremy Evans is named head coach for Wolf Pack women's soccer at the University of Nevada, Reno (he built strong LTCC programs) and will work to lead the team to success.  2NEWS
