COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today at Scheels at Legends mall in Sparks, the 2 News Nevada crew welcomes shoppers to donate to the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Team members ring bells and engage the community — a local effort supporting programs that help people in Northern Nevada.  2NEWS
  • Teen Mike built a close bond with his mentor Allison Gorelick through Washoe County’s Be the FAM program, which supports youth aging out of foster care with mentoring and air hockey challenges; mentors meet at least three hours a month to build lasting friendships.  KUNR
  • The VA Sierra Nevada Health System hosted an outreach event (yesterday) to help unsheltered veterans secure housing. The event linked veterans with available support services.  2NEWS
  • The Reno Police Department held its annual downtown toy delivery event on Friday, handing out gifts to local children (supporting community spirit ahead of the holiday season).  2NEWS
  • The Salvation Army held an Angel Tree distribution Friday from 8 a.m. & 2 p.m. More than 700 families received over 6,000 toys and 1,500 food boxes to help make Christmas brighter for many in Reno.  2NEWS
  • Tribal officials and community members on the Walker River Paiute reservation broke ground on a closed-circuit water system that will boost housing and local economic opportunities over 32,000 acres. The project, developed after a decade of planning and federal funding support, will add 35 new homes.  KUNR

  • Nevada ranchers can attend the University of Nevada, Reno’s annual Cattlemen’s Update beginning January 12 with a free virtual session followed by in-person events in Fallon, Ely & Elko & Winnemucca.   • Reno Starbucks at 6890 S. McCarran Blvd closed on Dec.15 when unionized baristas started striking over alleged unfair labor practices — local workers have been picketing daily as they push for a fair contract.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • Storms will bring rain and gusty winds to Reno today while the Sierra and areas near Lake Tahoe may see travel delays during Christmas week with flood and winter storm watches in effect (heavier snow is expected at high elevations).  Reno Gazette Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Sparks faces a housing crunch as federal land limits affordable development and officials review proposals aimed at freeing up land—an approach modeled on a 1998 law to boost growth and help meet rising demand.  KUNR
  • Rising housing costs in Tahoe force essential workers like teachers and restaurant staff to commute from nearby towns, straining their budgets and local labor. Officials estimate 1,200 new housing units must be built by 2026 (65% affordable) to help stabilize the region.  KUNR

  • Rain has delayed skiing in Tahoe where resorts currently open only limited beginner trails, but Mt. Rose near Reno expects rain this weekend and snowfall starting Christmas Eve that could boost slopes with up to four feet of snow by Dec. 26 (forecast by OpenSnow).  Reno Gazette Journal
