COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Scouts from Pack + Troop 7322 will join Catholic Charities to collect food donations before Mass on Saturday, Dec. 13 and Sunday, Dec. 14 at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church to benefit St. Vincent’s Food Pantry in Reno.  2NEWS
  • Local food pantries are urging residents to donate nonperishable items, with special need for protein, to support Share Your Christmas. Donations will be accepted Friday from 6am to 6pm at Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, the Governor's Mansion in Carson City, the Carson Valley Inn in Minden, and Raley's in Fernley.  2NEWS
  • A Christmas food drive is scheduled for Friday in Reno + Carson City + Minden + Fernley, giving local residents a chance to donate food during the holiday season.  2NEWS
  • On Wednesday, the Giving Machine returned for the holiday season at the RC Willey on Steamboat Parkway, with donations supporting local and international charities such as Nevada Humane Society and Food Bank of Northern Nevada + volunteers aided donors throughout the day.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Washoe County School District approved a new two-year contract for teachers yesterday that provides a 2% raise for most and nearly 10% for hard-to-fill roles, bonuses, stipends, and 17 days of paid time off (with back pay from July 1). The deal adds measures to improve classroom safety.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • California Department of Education has ordered Truckee, North Tahoe and South Tahoe schools to join the California Interscholastic Federation for athletics starting in the 2026 to 2027 school year after a complaint over eligibility policies; the TTUSD board will review steps at next Wednesday’s meeting + further details will follow.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful is hosting drop-offs for real trees & non-working lights at local parks Dec. 26–Jan. 11, with additional light drop-offs at Greater Nevada Credit Union Dec. 15–Jan. 11 and tree drop-offs at Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Jan. 3 & 4 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  2NEWS
  • Smoke was seen in south Reno Wednesday evening near South Virginia Street and Meadowood Mall, confirmed on an NV Energy camera. Officials are gathering details to determine the source of the smoke.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada Housing Division launched the Worker Advantage Program today to provide essential workers with $20,000 for a home down payment. The no-interest, no-payment 30-year second mortgage helps around 900 households under Governor Lombardo’s Housing Access and Attainability Act.  2NEWS
  • Reno officials will host a community meeting on Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Reno Sparks Chamber of Commerce to plan the future of the Lear Theater, vacant for over 20 years. The meeting will gather input on repair costs estimated between 18 and 25 million dollars.  KRNV
