COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Nevada Veterans Memorial Plaza in Sparks will host a quiet wreath-laying event this Saturday at 9 a.m. as community members honor service members and reflect on the legacy of Captain Joshua Byers + remember those who have served.  2NEWS
  • Ten Reno Works graduates took a step toward work readiness at City Hall on Monday morning as part of a 12-week program that helps homeless community members gain training and opportunities (they join 137 others since 2015).  2NEWS
  • Local Girl Scouts completed repairs on the Little Rainbow Bridge at Crissie Caughlin after vandalism last month, and a ribbon cutting will be held soon to mark the reopening.  2NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • State analysts reported that, after excluding one-time windfalls from administrative anomalies, Nevada revenue sits about 2% above its conservative forecast set earlier this year. The Economic Forum did not adjust the estimate despite mixed performance from various tax sources.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will meet today at 2 p.m. at the WCSD Administration Building at 425 E. Ninth Street in Reno to discuss the 2025-2027 collective bargaining agreement with the Washoe Education Association + software procurement plans and zoning changes for modifying enrollment boundaries at several schools.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NDOW found fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans on a California leaf-nosed bat at Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Clark County. No bats show signs of white-nose syndrome; officials intend to boost monitoring plus public education and equipment sterilization to protect bat populations while the fungus does not affect humans or pets.  2NEWS
  • A Utah-based geothermal exploration company discovered a hidden resource near Tonopah using AI, with two wells drilled to a 250° reservoir (on Bureau of Land Management land). The firm plans to build a power plant there in the next 3 to 5 years as part of its AI-led discovery process.  KRNV
  • A Tahoe nonprofit will send divers to clean 72 miles of lake shoreline by extending dives to 35 to 55 feet using new equipment and Nitrox gas. The team began planning in 2022 and will use diver propulsion vehicles — the initiative advances their efforts to protect the lake.  2NEWS

  • On Monday night, community members gathered at Reno-Stead Airport for a Citizens' Advisory Board meeting that provided a status update on the future of the 395 North Valleys Project (a key local development).  2NEWS
  • Sparks City Council approved a new affordable housing plan on I Street, expanding housing options for residents — the decision was made Dec. 8, 2025 and planning for construction is expected soon.  2NEWS
  • New federal HUD rules restrict how much funding Nevada counties can use for permanent housing, putting 925 residents at risk of losing support. Washoe and Clark counties are preparing for cuts and seeking strategies to keep essential programs running.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • After Thanksgiving, local health officials say respiratory illness cases have risen across northern Nevada as they monitor the situation closely.  2NEWS
