COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 39 North Pole Village returns as a festive holiday destination, drawing locals to family-friendly surprises (including light displays and seasonal treats) to brighten the winter season.  2NEWS
  • After federal funding delays forced the Northern Nevada International Center to cut nearly two-thirds of its staff earlier this year, the center secured funding through September for its refugee resettlement program and will rehire employees and welcome new refugees in December (as part of a federal resettlement plan).  KUNR
  • Local first responders have issued safety tips for backcountry recreation after a rise in rescues as snowfall increases. Officials advise hikers and off-roaders to check weather forecasts, share their plans with someone, and carry backup communication devices because cell service may be limited.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New research by Headwaters Economics finds that culverts in Nevada and other Mountain West states are outdated and may increase flood risks as storms grow more intense. Local agencies must secure funding and update designs to protect roads and communities.  KUNR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Reno Fire Department launched an online dashboard on Dec. 4 that shows each station's impact in the community & offers data for public review.  2NEWS
  • Crews will repave a section of USA Parkway this weekend, causing partial closures and lane reductions at Denmark and Sydney Drive intersections. NDOT reported traffic increased from 6,500 cars daily in 2014 to 24,000 now and detour routes will guide drivers from 5 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday.  2NEWS
  • Residents in northern Nevada received a false quake alert near Dayton at 8:06 a.m. Thursday, which was canceled 20 minutes later; experts at the Nevada Seismological Lab said they will work with USGS partners to add new seismic stations + improve warning accuracy.  KRNV

  • Nevada Women’s Soccer head coach Vanessa Valentine stepped down Thursday, prompting Director of Athletics Stephanie Rempe to announce a national search for her replacement. Valentine led the team for three seasons with 14 wins and two Mountain West Tournament trips.  2NEWS
