COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dolan Auto Group and Reno Police Department are partnering today with Toys for Tots for a shopping spree from noon to 2 p.m. at the Target on Sierra Center Parkway to buy new toys for children in need.  2NEWS
  • Nonprofits and organizations in the Silver State joined Giving Tuesday on December 2 to help those in need—this global generosity movement held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving encourages donations and volunteer work.  2NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • A drone will map 500 feet of the unseen section of Sutro Tunnel this week using LiDAR technology—data that will help restoration teams assess safety and guide future work. The flight will also search for a dam built in 1979 and study soil composition to support the landmark’s preservation.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lake Tahoe officials plan prescribed burns this week to thin vegetation and reduce wildfire hazards by targeting 8 acres at Lilly Lake BE02 Rx and 42 acres at Lilly Lake BE03 Rx near Echo Summit. Nearby roads may be closed for safety and residents may see smoke + drivers should check air quality updates.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal funding has been restored for the Northern Nevada International Center—its refugee resettlement work is now limited by new federal rules. A presidential determination that allows up to 7,500 refugees in 2026 means the center will serve only white Afrikaners from South Africa while continuing with its current refugee program.  KRNV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Northern Nevada Public Health District visited South Peak by Vintage Apartments Tuesday after residents reported growing piles of trash including mattresses, toys, and old furniture with children seen playing nearby. Repairs to the broken trash compactor are scheduled for December 5th—this is the property’s second trash violation since May, and officials will return after repairs to check the disposal system.  KRNV

  • Jordan Getzelman has been promoted to lead the Wolf Pack baseball team — he takes charge as the team enters a new phase.  2NEWS
  • The Reno indoor track will host the Mountain West conference championships later this year—an event that will draw top athletes to the facility.  2NEWS
