Good morning, Reno. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 26th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Helix Electric held an event yesterday to help keep the homeless warm during this season—showing its commitment to local welfare.  2NEWS
  • The University of Nevada, Reno is asking the community to donate gently used winter wear and nonperishable food items to its on-campus pantry at the ASUN Center for Student Engagement on the third floor of Joe Crowley Student Union. The donation drive runs until December 10 — rising living costs have increased demand as nearly one in three students faces food insecurity.  2NEWS
  • Sparks is set to launch its annual Hometowne Christmas tree lighting on Dec. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. near the gazebo on Victorian Ave — the mayor will light a 60-foot giant sequoia tree with live music and free hot chocolate, and a 'Christmas in Toyland' parade will follow on Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. featuring marching bands, costumes, animals and a float by Scouting America Troop 10.  KRNV
  • Peak holiday travel began Tuesday when Reno travelers started heading home—Reno-Tahoe International Airport recorded over 14,000 passengers during one of the season’s busiest days. Local drivers have been advised to check parking availability and road conditions before leaving to avoid delays.  2NEWS
  • United Nissan Reno donated $3,000 to three local organizations—the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission and Catholic Charities—to help provide Thanksgiving meals for families in northern Nevada. The funds will allow the charities to supply nearly 4,000 meals and replenish food pantries ahead of the holiday.  KRNV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local textile artist Holly Gardner created Washoe County’s section of the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree skirt that shows the Sierra Nevada mountains and Lake Tahoe—she completed her design in four weeks for the tree lighting event on Dec. 2. The piece is one of 17 sections representing Nevada counties that will be displayed on Silver Belle at the event.  KRNV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A West Health—Gallup survey of nearly 20,000 Americans found that Nevada ranked 50th among 51 jurisdictions for health care experiences, earning a C– overall with a D+ for cost and a C– for quality and access. The report showed Nevada sits between New Mexico and Alaska and noted that 47% of U.S. adults worry about affording care while 20% have had trouble paying for prescriptions.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • A proposed change by the U.S. Department of Education is set to cut federal student loans for advanced nursing degrees, a move that could worsen Nevada’s nursing shortage by limiting funds for nurse practitioners and educators — nearly 200,000 signatures have been collected on a petition opposing the change. University of Nevada, Reno officials warned that if the new definition is adopted, students may face delays in finishing their education and be forced to seek riskier, commercial loan options.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Illnesses such as the common cold, rhinovirus, and enterovirus are still spreading in the community as the holidays come, with Renown Health showing more ER visits and Northern Nevada Public Health noting early flu signs—health workers advise sick people to stay home and wash hands often to keep others safe.  2NEWS
  • Yesterday, Northern Nevada first responders received new AEGIS baby medical wraps to improve newborn safety during emergency transports. The Nevada Emergency Medical Services for Children Program distributed the crash-tested wraps at the Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) in Carson City (designed to support skin-to-skin bonding and temperature regulation) after data showed many field deliveries were hypothermic.  KRNV

  • The Spanish Springs Cougars beat the Faith Lutheran Crusaders 42 to 23 yesterday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to clinch the Nevada 5A state championship. They built an early lead with 14 points each quarter—while Faith Lutheran scored 13 in the final period—to secure the win.  2NEWS
