  • Heavenly Food Pantry at Rehoboth-Holy Temple COGIC in Reno will hold its third annual Thanksgiving food drive tomorrow on November 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 700 Smithridge Drive, Suite #C, where volunteers will distribute pre-prepared dinners for about 200 people & ensure meals are available until supplies run out.  2NEWS
  • Grand Sierra Resort reopened its ice rink yesterday with skating, holiday treats and music — it also lit over 100 trees to launch its festive celebrations.  2NEWS
  • Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue held a parade and toy drive on November 20 to celebrate the upcoming Christmas season, engaging local residents in the holiday spirit.  2NEWS
  • The Salvation Army is accepting Angel Tree sign-ups through November 26 to support families during the holiday season—community members can help make a difference by donating gifts.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A bear entered a home off Kingsbury Grade near Lake Tahoe early Wednesday, Nov. 19 and injured an 87-year-old couple who were treated at the hospital — officials stress that residents should secure attractants to avoid similar incidents.  Reno Gazette Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Several local grocery stores are set to open on varied hours this Thanksgiving—Raley’s will open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Reno Safeway will run 24 hours while chains like Costco, Natural Grocers, Trader Joe’s, and Walmart remain closed, with Grocery Outlet, Smart & Final and Winco offering shortened schedules.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Washoe County School District met to present and discuss proposed elementary school zoning for 2028–2029.  2NEWS
  • The University Studies Abroad Consortium, based at UNR for over 40 years, is working to keep study abroad opportunities open even as federal budget cuts and rising costs make it harder for students. The nonprofit will launch a national fundraising campaign — aimed at expanding scholarship support to pay for flights and housing — to help more students study abroad.  KUNR
  • The Washoe County School District Zoning Advisory Committee met Thursday night at Dodson Elementary School and voted with 10 votes to 1 to rezone four elementary schools for the 2028 school year — combining Smithridge and Dodson into a new school on the old Pine campus — and shifting North Dodson students to Hidden Valley Elementary, South Dodson students to Donner Springs, and Corbett and Smithridge students to the new campus.  2NEWS

  • Prescribed burns are scheduled for next week—south of Rancho Haven in Washoe County.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UNR President Brian Sandoval praised the passage of the state financial appropriations bill (SB4) on November 20; he said the measure is expected to influence upcoming state budget priorities.  2NEWS
  • Federal employees who worked during the government shutdown were honored in a ceremony at Reno-Tahoe International Airport on Nov 20—officials recognized their dedicated service.  2NEWS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe opens today at 9 a.m.—the resort 25 miles from Reno had planned an earlier start on Nov. 8 but warm weather delayed its opening; three intermediate trails are ready while more beginner terrain will come as snowmaking continues.
