COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Biggest Little Action Group in Reno launched a community defense effort by distributing whistle packets that include a bilingual instruction booklet and guide on whistle patterns for alerting neighbors during potential immigration raids. The group distributed about 1,000 packets and will expand its efforts at community events to build a network that helps protect vulnerable residents — the initiative aims to slow enforcement actions.  KUNR
  • Rain and snow in Northern Nevada may help some ski resorts open this weekend after Mt. Rose delayed its start due to a warm fall, while Sugar Bowl runs one open slope and Heavenly and Northstar plan to begin operations Friday + local sports and cultural events, including today’s Nevada men’s basketball game, continue throughout the week.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Washoe County Regional Services nearly reached 77% capacity last Friday when extra animals from three cruelty cases, including 30 dogs and 12 poultry birds, filled the shelter. Community rescue partners helped get operations back on track over the weekend — the shelter will stay near capacity until investigations are completed.  KRNV
  • The Pie it Forward event on November 17 raised funds that will benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada — all proceeds from the event are designated to support the charity.  2NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Nevada dropped about 10 cents a gallon from last week—this change was reported yesterday and may lead to reduced costs at local pumps. The market is showing steadier trends as consumers continue to monitor fuel prices.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Greenbrae Elementary School will meet first responders today from 9 to 10:30 a.m. in Sparks to learn traffic safety and see emergency vehicles (part of National Crash Responder Safety Week).  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A surveillance video showed a bear strolling past Bighorn Tavern in south Reno yesterday — officials noted wildlife is preparing for winter. They urge local residents near the foothills to secure garbage — failure to do so may result in fines under local ordinances.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NDOT and local first responders are reminding drivers to obey Nevada’s Move Over law during Crash Responder Safety Week — a measure to protect roadside emergency workers. Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam and other officials noted that 46 responders were killed nationwide last year and warned that slick weather increases crash risks.  2NEWS
  • The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will meet today at 2 p.m. at the WCSD Administration Building at 425 E. Ninth Street in Reno to discuss repurposing four elementary schools for upcoming school years and review the Native Culture and Education Program.  2NEWS

  • Renown opened a new urgent care center on South McCarran Boulevard on November 17th—adding another option for local residents to get quick health care.  2NEWS
  • Community Health Alliance will host two Mobile Pediatric Dental Clinics for children and teens ages 0-20 on November 20 and December 18 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Nell J. Redfield Health Center on Sun Valley Blvd—patients can receive oral exams, x-rays, dental cleanings, fluoride treatment, sealants and fillings plus nutritional instruction while appointments are encouraged with walk-ins welcome.  2NEWS

  • Spanish Springs High School Varsity Cheer Team is seeking donations to help cover travel and transportation costs for its Las Vegas trip — on a journey with the football team — so the cheerleaders can support the Cougars during the state championship run.  2NEWS
