COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Reno will host the grand opening of the Mira Loma Sports Courts Reconstruction Project on November 15 at 11 a.m. at Mira Loma Park—Councilmember Miguel Martinez will give remarks and free treats will be offered as a $788,888 investment from the fiscal year 2024 to 2025 Capital Improvement Plan upgrades the park.  2NEWS
  • Four downtown Reno churches have partnered with RISE to open warming centers for those in need—offering a safe place to sleep and get food, water, and hygiene supplies from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Each facility will rotate weekly—ensuring clients also receive warm clothing, heating packs, and other essentials as cold weather continues.  2NEWS
  • Food Bank of Northern Nevada will host three additional food distributions on Saturday, November 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event includes a drive-thru at 1305 Sullivan Lane in Sparks and distributions at New Frontier and Out of Egypt Pantry in Fallon and Carson Valley Food Closet—helping locals while SNAP benefits for November remain unclear.  KUNR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Nevada, Reno sent a letter reminding tailgaters of its tailgate policy and will ban box trucks, semi trucks, flatbeds, and DJ stages starting November 15—measures set to manage traffic and ensure emergency access. Clear signage will mark all game day entrances.  2NEWS
  • Col. Jen Kimsey, a Reno woman with 31 years in the Nevada Air National Guard, was honored during ASU’s Salute to Service week for balancing military duty, family, and education — she earned her degree online while deployed and retired in 2025.  2NEWS
  • Libby Booth Elementary School is undergoing renovations that will be completed by next school year.  2NEWS

  • Today, the City of Reno unveiled six new educational signs at Valley Wood Park in Northwest Reno that point out gardens and pollinator habitats—designed by City employees with help from the Valley Wood Wildlife Gardens Task Force and funded by a donation from Councilmember Kathleen Taylor. Mayor Hillary Schieve said the signs will help park visitors learn about native plants and sustainable gardening.  2NEWS
  • The city approved a zoning amendment for South Valley Regional Park yesterday—this change supports plans for future park expansion.  2NEWS
  • Reno officials will resume discussions on noise limits at the Nov. 19 meeting after residents complained about a loud Halloween concert headlined by Subtronics. Councilwoman Kathleen Taylor said sound adjustments were made during the event and officials may consider shortening venue hours—hoping to reduce future disruptions.  KRNV
  • Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue completed renovations on Fire Station 37 in Hidden Valley — the project finished yesterday.  2NEWS
