COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada announced that St. Vincent’s Food Pantry and nearby centers now offer extended hours and extra service days to meet rising food demand—new schedules include weekday mornings and weekend dinners until the end of November.  KRNV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Reno-Tahoe schools and youth groups are now using a small robot called Turf Tank to paint sports fields. The robot uses GPS and programming to mark lines for football, soccer, and lacrosse, saving time (its base model costs about $26,000) and reducing labor (leasing fees range from $6,000 to $16,000 per year).  Reno Gazette Journal

  • Lisa Jansen has been named the new executive director of Hot August Nights as the organization readies for its 40th anniversary celebration in 2026. She brings over 20 years of event management experience (including roles at One Nevada Credit Union and the Nugget Casino Resort) following the recent resignation of former director Deny Dotson.  KRNV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Western Nevada College students now get free entry to the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno starting November—this new partnership honors the late Wayne Prim's legacy by giving students access to gallery exhibits and live events. Students show their college ID to enter the museum, which operates Tuesday through Sunday.  KRNV
  • UNR, WCSD and TMCC report that rising grocery prices and a government shutdown have increased food insecurity among students – UNR now sees 1 in 3 students worried about meals. The school district and colleges now offer free food pantries at many sites, mobile pantries on future dates and resource centers for families in need.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Clean Up The Lake completed a pilot project from February to July that used divers with specialized equipment—Diver Propulsion Vehicles and Nitrox—to explore Lake Tahoe’s deep sections and remove nearly 2,000 pounds of litter. The project involved local students in learning about underwater pollution, and researchers estimate more than 29,000 pounds of trash may still rest on the lakebed while its data will guide future cleanup efforts.  KUNR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport officials at Reno-Tahoe said passengers may face delays as 40 major airports start cutting 10% of flights today due to the federal government shutdown. Officials said they are coordinating with the FAA, TSA, and CBP and urged travelers to check their airline for flight status before arriving.  Reno Gazette Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada HOPES is expanding its behavioral health services with a six-week Intensive Outpatient Program to help individuals struggling with problem gambling. The program meets Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3 to 6 p.m. with a nine-hour weekly commitment—healthcare providers and community partners are encouraged to refer those in need.  KRNV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Grand Sierra Resort’s ice rink will reopen on Nov. 20 with doors opening at 4 p.m. and the first skating session starting at 5 p.m. One-hour sessions will cost $19 for skate rentals or $12 for guests with their own skates, and a live DJ will perform from 5 to 9 p.m. as sessions run until 9:30 p.m. daily with extended hours until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.  2NEWS
  • Grand Sierra Resort's ice rink in Reno will reopen on November 20 with doors opening at 4 p.m. and skating sessions starting at 5 p.m. The rink will offer one-hour sessions at $19 and special late-night sessions until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays—plus a grand opening event featuring a live DJ from 5 to 9 p.m.—with a refreshed food menu featuring seasonal treats.  KRNV
