ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews from WCSO, Nevada State Police, NLTFPD and NDOT removed a fallen tree that slowed traffic along State Route 28 near Sand Harbor this morning—all lanes are now open although strong winds may cause additional hazards.  KRNV
  • A strong wind snapped a power pole near Mt. Rose on November 5th at 7:30 a.m., causing chain controls and power outages.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Strong winds knocked down a power pole along Lemmon Drive near Surge Street in Lemmon Valley—utility crews began checking the damage.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Reno tells residents to report any broken or fallen trees because they can be a danger—if a tree touches power lines, call NVEnergy at 775-834-444 and then Reno Direct, and if not, report it to Reno Direct.  2NEWS
  • NV Energy said that high winds have led to pro-active power shut-offs in communities from Genoa to Carson City with more than 7,300 customers without power in Washoe County—additional outages are expected today.  2NEWS
  • Yesterday, the Reno Planning Commission approved two measures to support local needs. One measure allows Midtown bar Jupiter Red Bar to host live entertainment after 11 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with security present—while the other removes zoning barriers for childcare centers to help address the childcare desert.  2NEWS
  • On Wednesday, the Reno Planning Commission approved a live entertainment permit for a Midtown bar—allowing it to host shows after 11 p.m.  2NEWS
  • The Reno Fire Department — in collaboration with SWCA Environmental Consultants — has opened the public review for the draft 2026 Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which will run through Dec. 3 to boost wildfire safety. Residents can review the draft online or at City Hall and join the public webinar on Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. to share feedback.  KRNV
  • Today, nearly 200,000 Nevada households received a boost to their EBT cards when the state distributed partial SNAP benefits worth about $29 million—this action comes amid updated USDA guidance during a federal shutdown. DSS Administrator Robert Thompson said payments vary by income—only households with no income received 50% of their usual amount while others saw lower benefits or none.  KRNV
  • Yesterday, Nevada transmitted about $29 million in SNAP benefits to over 196,000 eligible households following federal guidance, ensuring funds reached recipients without delay. The Nevada National Guard will activate 35 personnel on Wednesday — to help support local food banks under the Food Insecurity Nevada Plan.  2NEWS

  • Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe postponed its planned opening on Nov. 8 due to warm weather that left the base of packed snow too low despite blizzard-like conditions on Nov. 5—resort officials said a new date will be announced once 12 to 14 inches of snow are present.  Reno Gazette Journal
