COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in downtown Reno have seen several dead pigeons near the Arlington bridge construction site—raising fears that dust at the site might be affecting air quality. RTC said dirt piles are watered down to reduce dust—while city and state agencies noted they do not investigate pigeon deaths, leaving residents to watch the area for further changes.  2NEWS
  • A year and a half after a fire, the burned remains of a South Reno home keep causing worry for neighbors, who say the site attracts homeless people and unsupervised children. The homeowner’s cleanup stopped when the city put a stop work order—pending one more permit document—on the repairs, leaving residents frustrated with the delay.  KRNV

  • Discount retailer Burlington will open a new store in north Reno at 1901 Silverada Blvd. on Nov. 1 as part of a nationwide expansion—its first 100 shoppers will receive a $10 bonus card.  Reno Gazette Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Nevadans are invited to share personal memories for America’s 250th anniversary archive through the new 'Our Nevada Stories' program led by state Folklorist Brad McMullen; submissions can be made online or in-person and will later feature in a podcast series and museum exhibits.  2NEWS
  • Residents in the Reno-Tahoe area have a busy week ahead with more than 30 events ranging from live music shows starting tonight to family trick-or-treating on Friday with mild 50s and 60s temperatures. Community celebrations include a Nevada Day parade and Dia de los Muertos festivities on Nov 1—local concerts, sports games and road projects add to a packed slate—giving residents plenty to enjoy this three-day weekend.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees will meet at 2 p.m. at the WCSD Administration Building at 425 E. Ninth Street in Reno to discuss school zoning for the 2027–28 school year, the 2026–27 fiscal budget, and a superintendent evaluation. The board will cover topics for Bernice Mathews, Kate Smith, Rita Cannan, Agnes Risley, and Lois Allen elementary schools as well as Traner and Desert Skies middle schools—issues that could shape district policy—during the meeting.  2NEWS
  • The Washoe County School Board will review Superintendent Joe Ernst’s final evaluation for the 2024—25 school year today and may take action based on six performance targets. Consultant Dr. Tom Alsbury will present his findings, which could allow a 2% salary increase if Ernst is rated effective.  KRNV
  • Grand Sierra Resort is donating $15,000 to Vaughn Middle School in Reno to support student programs, and representatives will present the check to Principal Mandy Lobkowicz and staff today—this unrestricted donation is part of the resort’s ongoing GSR Cares program.  2NEWS
  • Sierra Nevada Job Corps is accepting new students who will receive training to help them start careers; about 15 students have joined each week over the past three weeks. The program helps graduates find work—employers can call 8007335627 for more details.  2NEWS
  • Sky Ranch Middle School Principal Jill Bayliss apologized on Monday for a policy that let only honor roll students, free breakfast participants or those with a cold pass enter early on freezing mornings+ she explained that all students may come inside when it is below 20 degrees or raining and said she will meet with student leaders today to address concerns after the social media debate emerged.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Van Sickle Bi-State Park's gates and facilities will close for winter starting November 1 — park roads, parking lots and trash collection will cease and visitors are asked not to leave any trash behind. Guests may still use the park grounds for day-hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing but must park outside the gate at Heavenly Village Way — Montreal Road in South Lake Tahoe.  2NEWS
  • Late-spring frosts wiped out food sources for black bears and pushed them into neighborhoods, a UNR study found — researchers tracked over 500 bears captured from 1998 to 2022 and noted a rise in human-bear conflicts in frost years.  KUNR
  • A recent study found that nearly 40% of groundwater wells in Nevada showed steep declines over the past three decades due to drought and growing water demand—raising concerns for water-dependent ecosystems. The research calls for better monitoring, smarter water management, and stronger policies to protect both water supplies and local habitats.  Reno Gazette Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday night, the Incline Village and Crystal Bay Citizens Advisory Board met with Nevada State Parks to review the parking reservation system at Sand Harbor State Park—30% of the reservations were no-call no-shows from the season running April 15 to October 15. The board raised safety worries about evacuation routes along 28 South and parking along Highway 28 while Nevada State Parks said the system will continue and may add a bus fee in summer 2026 or 2027.  2NEWS
  • The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is preparing for 48,000 Reno-area residents to miss SNAP food benefits scheduled for Saturday due to the federal shutdown (each EBT card usually delivers about $6 daily) and is ramping up food sourcing to help those affected. Gov. Lombardo and state agencies will expand emergency support with state funds and are in talks with the Nevada National Guard to assist food pantries (emergency measures include $38.8 million in state funding and further requests) to ease the impact.  Reno Gazette Journal
