CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia City is hosting a string of Hauntober events this month—locals are urged to visit soon to enjoy the fun before time runs out.  2NEWS
  • Miss Nebraska Audrey Eckert was crowned Miss USA during Friday evening’s finals at the Grand Sierra Resort—Miss Nevada Mary Sickler finished in the top five.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNR President Brian Sandoval delivered his fifth State of the University address where he discussed new projects and his vision for the future of the campus — outlining initiatives that aim to drive growth and improvement.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Seven local agencies, including Truckee Fire Protection District, secured $8 million from CAL FIRE’s Forest Health Program — with matching funds — to boost forest health across nearly 3,000 acres in Nevada and Placer counties. The two-year project will thin trees, replant areas, use biomass, and perform prescribed burning to lessen wildfire risk through 2026 and 2027.  KUNR

  • The Forest Service cut down a tree near Sky Tavern and Mt. Rose ski areas after months of preparation — it is now ready to serve as the Capitol Christmas tree for the upcoming holiday season.  2NEWS

  • Residents can safely dispose of unused medicine at an event designed to prevent drug misuse—official details on time and location will be shared soon.  2NEWS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Before Friday night’s Homecoming game, the Nevada Wolf Pack inducted its 2010 team—including Colin Kaepernick and Chris Ault—into its Hall of Fame at Mackay Stadium. The team lost 24-3 to Boise State, with the game marking a moment to honor a memorable season—remembered for the 'Mackay Miracle.'  2NEWS
  • The Pack’s Hall of Fame ceremony took place at MacKay Stadium yesterday plus a legendary coach was honored during the pre-game celebration.  2NEWS
  • Nevada will host Boise State for Homecoming at Mackay Stadium Friday at 7 p.m.—the game will be shown on CBS Sports Network and local radio while honoring the 2010 team as a 2025 Hall of Fame inductee. Freshman quarterback Carter Jones leads the Wolf Pack, which has a 1-6 overall record and 0-3 in Mountain West play as it seeks a rebound.  2NEWS
  • Three former Reno Aces players — Tyler Heineman and Daulton Varsho for the Blue Jays and Anthony Banda for the Dodgers — will appear in the World Series beginning Friday night, while former Ace Buddy Kennedy is set to receive a ring after playing for both teams in August. The players join the championship series as their teams prepare for postseason action.  2NEWS
