COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reno-Sparks CROP Hunger Walk returns Sunday for its 34th year to honor longtime supporter Rita Jeffres as community members gather for hunger relief. Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. at Sparks United Methodist Church and the event will follow a new 1.7-mile route along local streets—raising funds for local and global hunger relief.  2NEWS
  • Local organizers will hold the 33rd annual (Share Your Christmas) Drive By Food Drive to help feed residents in need. Community members will be encouraged to donate food at designated drop-off locations.  2NEWS
  • Reno voters can now help pick the region's favorite burger as 761 locals nominated 108 options from 85 restaurants — the top 64 will compete in voting open until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • Sugar Bowl is starting new construction projects—exciting additions and modern upgrades that will be finished next year. The plans will boost the venue’s winter appeal for local visitors.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • The University of Nevada, Reno has not released video evidence from its investigation into Zeus the swan's death—misdemeanor charges were filed after a necropsy showed that natural causes led to Zeus's passing and details remain restricted as the case is heard in Reno Municipal Court.  KRNV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Science Distilled will host 'Reinventing Nevada' on October 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mackay Science Building—panelists from UNR and PBS Reno will discuss how Nevada uses its mining past to spark new tourism opportunities—before the talk, guests can tour the Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum from 5 to 6:30 p.m., with tickets costing $10 for Discovery members and $15 for nonmembers.  2NEWS
  • The Washoe County School District will host the 2025 College Fair on Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Reno-Sparks Convention Center at 4590 S. Virginia St.—high school students and their families can meet admissions representatives and attend seminars on financial aid, scholarships, and support resources. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Reno homeowner near Steamboat Ditch reported several bear visits in recent weeks, including a close encounter on October 4th at 6:30 p.m. — Nevada Department of Wildlife officials said the bear behavior is normal as the animals search for food before winter and plan to visit her property soon.  KRNV
  • A Nature Conservancy study found nearly 40% of Nevada wells lost water, putting springs, wetlands, and wildlife at risk due to groundwater pumping, climate change, rapid development, and population growth. The report recommends better well monitoring, smarter water management, and stronger policies to protect groundwater levels — a guide for other Mountain West states.  KUNR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a meeting on Wednesday, the Washoe County Library Board advanced a fiscal year 2027 budget that keeps the Verdi Library open two days per week instead of reducing it to one day with a bookmobile—ensuring students have access after school. The plan also cuts operating hours at Duncan-Trainer and Incline Village by six hours per week and now awaits County Commissioners’ approval around February.  KRNV
  • The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada encourages residents to join the Great Nevada ShakeOut earthquake drill today at 10:16 a.m. Participants will drop, cover, and hold on during shaking to practice emergency safety steps for potential quakes.  2NEWS
