COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reno Aces Foundation announced that the 2025 grant application for northern Nevada organizations opened Monday, October 13 at 10:00 a.m. and will close Friday, November 14 at 11:59 p.m.—local nonprofits, schools, and community groups must complete an online form detailing their mission, project proposal, and budget needs.  2NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A tourism downturn is affecting Nevada as Las Vegas saw a nearly 7% drop in visitors in the first half of 2025 while Reno-Sparks recorded a modest 2% increase. Experts point to higher costs, tariff policies, and lower foreign travel as key reasons for the mixed outlook—leaving the state’s tourism sector with uneven recovery prospects.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • Washoe County school of choice applications are open for parents—submissions will be accepted until October 24.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Reno is offering a discounted tree sale to help lower energy bills through the ReLEAF Reno program in collaboration with the Arbor Day Foundation—residents can reserve up to two trees for $35 each and pick them up at Idlewild Park Maintenance yard on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. to noon.  KRNV
  • Experts advise drivers crossing snowy mountain passes to pack needed supplies and fill up their gas tanks or secure a full battery — measures that will help avoid delays and promote safe travel as winter weather worsens — ensuring preparedness on the road.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reno’s Community Court—set up to help the homeless with services at the Downtown Reno Public Library—will close at the end of this month after a judge said its 35% success rate does not justify continued investment.  2NEWS
  • The community court closed its doors after the judge said he felt the program was not successful—no plans have been announced to change the decision.  2NEWS
  • Chain controls are in effect on Mt. Rose Highway — the only area road requiring them. Drivers should check road conditions before travel.  2NEWS
  • The Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Governing Board approved the zoning change for the StoneGate project on Oct. 9, letting Heinz Ranch Land Co. begin Reno’s building and permitting steps. The project now calls for 1,350 mixed housing units and 12 million square feet of industrial and commercial space— it is expected to create about 8,880 jobs while local leaders continue asking questions about water use and potential data centers.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • As winter conditions hit the roads, Reno drivers are advised to take necessary steps to prepare their cars—doing so may reduce the risk of problems as conditions worsen.  2NEWS

  • Several Tahoe area ski resorts have announced planned opening dates for the upcoming season, with Mt. Rose scheduled to open on November 8+ Heavenly, Northstar California, Boreal Mountain, Sugar Bowl, and Soda Springs set to open on November 21, while Palisades Tahoe, Sierra-at-Tahoe, Royal Gorge, Diamond Peak, Kirkwood, Homewood Mountain, Tahoe Donner, and Donner Ski Ranch will open later; natural snowfall and snowmaking conditions may alter these plans.  2NEWS
