Good morning, Reno. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 10th of October.
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Grand Sierra Resort is undergoing a $1B upgrade that will add an arena, ice rink, parking garage, and workforce housing while removing Grand Adventure Land and the RV park, which closes Oct. 25 to become parking. Players bar will remain and the Grand Bay driving range will stay until a three-story golf center is built—changes that realign the property's features. Reno Gazette Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Reno will host a free Fall Tree Walk on October 19 at Virginia Lake Park—starting at 11 a.m.—where tree expert Rod Haulenbeek and meteorologist Angela Schilling will explain how weather influences fall colors. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada suspended its Women, Infants, and Children Program on October 9 due to a federal government shutdown that left funds exhausted for services like breastfeeding support, food packages, and nutritional education. The program redirected 531 families to the state WIC program—employees were laid off and offices closed as ITCN hoped for a quick funding solution. KUNR

- ➤ On Thursday, October 9th, the City of Reno and Rebuilding Together Northern Nevada launched applications for an Older Adults Home Modification Program to help homeowners aged 62 and older stay safely in their homes. The program requires meeting income and homeownership criteria and may assist up to 115 households with modifications such as carpet shifts—raised toilet seats and roll-in showers. 2NEWS
- ➤ Officials in Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County imposed bans on camping and sleeping in vehicles last year to move unhoused people toward services, yet jail records show that detentions of unhoused individuals have already increased. Rising rents and limited affordable housing appear to be worsening the issue—prompting concerns that the bans may discourage residents from seeking help. KUNR

This discussion follows the law passed during this year’s legislative session. 2NEWS
- ➤ Today the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Governing Board rejected an appeal on the Stonegate Heinz Ranch Development Project re-zoning in Cold Springs, confirming plans for industrial build-up and about 1,300 apartments.
