COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A bear was seen at a pond in Southwest Reno when a local resident captured it on camera around 6:30 p.m. on Oct 4 near the Steamboat Ditch below the Caughlin Ranch area off Royer Court (friends have called the area Kathi's Bear Spa and the resident said both he and the bear ran away after meeting eyes).  KRNV
  • A free shredding event is planned for Saturday, October 11 in Reno at the Atlantis Casino Resort’s west parking lot—mobile trucks will shred up to three boxes or bags of documents per car—to help protect against identity theft. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and welcomes donations for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada with no fee or registration required.  2NEWS
  • The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is offering free Kids Cafe meals for kids ages 2 to 18 at five locations during fall break — Downtown Reno Library, Sparks Library, North Valleys Library, Jessie Beck Elementary School, and Mariposa Language and Learning Academy. Director Jocelyn Lantrip said the program helps families facing food insecurity amid rising prices and shutdown concerns and will run until Friday.  2NEWS

  • Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue announced Green Waste Disposal Days for October—residents can drop off yard waste at designated sites as part of the city’s cleanup efforts.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews are cleaning debris from culverts on westbound I-80 at the Nevada and Sierra County line after summer thunderstorms. The number two lane will be closed Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Friday from 7 a.m. to noon for several weeks—Caltrans is overseeing the work.  2NEWS
  • The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is offering free training for residents who want to join Citizen Corps in Reno—this course helps volunteers learn vital public safety skills.  2NEWS
  • The Reno Fire Department took over the Reno-Tahoe International Airport fire station—its firefighters joined the department to serve local residents.  2NEWS
  • The Supreme Court declined to hear oral arguments in the John Doe GPS tracking case involving Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve—leaving the decision unexplained. Mayor Schieve filed suit in December 2022 after a mechanic found a tracking device on her car.  2NEWS
  • The Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation — DETR — is offering guidance to furloughed federal employees on how to apply for unemployment benefits during the government shutdown. The agency is also helping those with reduced hours and workers who are not receiving pay to access benefits and reconnect with opportunities.  2NEWS

HEALTH NEWS

  • REMSA will hold a free car seat inspection event on October 18 to help local parents ensure child safety. Residents can bring their car seats for a check and any needed adjustments—promoting secure travel for young passengers.  2NEWS
  • Renown announced that its urgent care center will open today in northwest Reno. The center will offer fast medical services to meet local demand.  2NEWS

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Local workers in Tahoe, such as teachers, restaurant staff and mental health advocates, face high rents and living costs that force many to commute from nearby areas like Reno and Carson City for work. Studies show a need for new affordable housing units and local groups are launching programs—such as converting short-term rentals to long-term homes—to help keep essential workers in the region.  KUNR
  • A 68-year-old building formerly used as a JCPenney store at 100 North Sierra Street in downtown Reno has been listed for sale at $9 million. The 55,600-square-foot property—renovated in 2020—is partly leased to tenants including Reno Axe and Liberty Food & Wine Exchange.  Reno Gazette Journal
