COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reno artist Ryan Canaday is set to perform at the Lip Sync Legends charity event today — funds raised will go to assistance for behavioral health.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A section of Rock Blvd. near Gault Way is closed until crews finish repairing a water leak—drivers are urged to use alternate routes.  2NEWS
  • On Friday morning, Sparks firefighters responded to a blaze at a warehouse on the 1200 block of E. Greg St. and controlled the fire at 8:40 a.m.—no injuries were reported and officials have not identified a cause.  KRNV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Burning Man Organization announced its 2026 theme — Axis Mundi — on Friday as crews finished cleaning up the 2025 playa after this year's burn. The festival will run from Aug. 30 through Sept. 7 next year and invites participants to join its creative and inclusive event.  Reno Gazette Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Research from ConsumerAffairs shows that owning a car in Nevada costs about $3,298 a year, making it the ninth highest cost in the nation. Rising auto insurance and fuel taxes—key factors that push expenses above the national average—continue to challenge local drivers.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School District improved its star ratings from 2024 to 2025 with over 80% of elementary, 70% of middle, and 53% of high schools showing gains—Natchez Elementary, for example, rose from one to three stars—yet many schools still scored lower than in 2018. The district celebrated record improvements in English and math proficiency rates while some high schools and schools like Pine Middle remained at lower levels.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Reno ended its water year with nearly 6.5 inches of water, which is below the 7.35 inch average even though almost 0.5 inch fell this week. The US Drought Monitor shows that parts of eastern Nevada remain in severe to extreme drought.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada senators have pledged to donate their salaries during the shutdown while federal workers have not received pay & the move highlights a clear contrast in how compensation is handled during this period.  2NEWS
  • The Arlington Avenue Bridges project is ongoing and is expected to finish by next summer. Officials say work will continue through the fall to make the bridges safe—measures that support long-term infrastructure—before final completion.  2NEWS
  • Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue is working with the National Fire Protection Association to promote Fire Prevention Week, which will run from Oct. 5-11, to teach Reno residents safe ways to handle lithium-ion batteries. They advise buying certified products, using proper chargers, and recycling batteries at approved spots — steps meant to lower fire risks.  KRNV
  • On Oct 3, the Reno Housing Authority held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to reopen 50 housing units—investing over $6.8 million in property renovations and upgrades.  2NEWS
  • Drivers are advised to use alternate routes because a water main break on Sparks Blvd. closed part of the road — crews are working to repair it through the weekend.  2NEWS
