  • The Hot August Nights Foundation winter coat drive collects new and gently used coats for youth in need in our community—running from October 1 to October 31 with drop-off locations at the Foundation office, Champion Chevrolet, Summit Racing Equipment, and more.  2NEWS

  • On Sept. 30, Grand Sierra Resort broke ground on its $1 billion arena project in Reno—attended by owner Alex Meruelo, Mayor Hillary Schieve and local sports figures. The project is expected to boost regional sports and entertainment and spur further development in the city.  Reno Gazette Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S. government took a 5% stake in Lithium Americas to help advance Thacker Pass, a major lithium project in northern Nevada built in a joint venture with General Motors. The move, announced in a non-binding agreement reached Wednesday, aims to reduce reliance on China for battery-grade lithium—vital for electric vehicles.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Reno launched an interactive housing dashboard that gives residents and officials updated data on housing needs and affordability trends using findings from the 2025 Housing Needs Assessment; the tool shows that 15,000 new homes are needed over the next ten years (9,000 of which would be affordable for low-income households).  2NEWS
  • The US government partially shut down Oct 1—keeping essential services like Social Security, USPS and air traffic control open while nonessential work paused and federal workers face possible layoffs.   • After a crippling ransomware attack in August, Nevada officials said they will not provide driver’s license records and partial Social Security numbers for all registered voters to the Department of Justice. Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar explained on a local podcast that election systems remain secure while personal data stays sensitive — prompting concerns ahead of the 2026 ballot.  KRNV
  • Today, the Nevada National Guard announced it will limit social media updates and cancel community relations requests—like flyovers—until Congress reaches a budget agreement during the federal shutdown, with military workers continuing without pay until a resolution is approved.  KRNV
