COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation will host its annual Dozers & Dirt event on Saturday, September 20 at the Rilite Aggregate pit in South Reno, where children 17 and younger can operate over 35 pieces of heavy equipment to raise funds for childhood cancer. Admission costs are $100 for kids operating equipment—non-riding children pay $20 and must be with an adult.  2NEWS
  • Reno High School will host the Northern Nevada Veterans Block Party on Saturday, offering free events for veterans, service members, their families and caregivers. The event includes a Color Run for suicide prevention with registration at 7:30 a.m. and a run at 8:00 a.m., free lunch, live entertainment and resource booths from over 50 groups — all aimed at honoring the military community and offering vital support.  2NEWS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A historic downtown Reno bank building will house The Mint Bar—a new sports bar with slot machines planned by Fine Entertainment as part of the Reno Revival project. The bar will open in October to meet 24-hour gaming license requirements and serve a mix of food and drinks while the property undergoes further renovations.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School District said more schools earned higher state ratings as test scores in English and math improved. The report showed that 83 schools raised their scores and top-rated elementary schools doubled during the school year—marking strong gains across the district.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NV Energy is working with local and federal agencies on wildfire mitigation projects in Chimney Peak and Heavenly Mountain Resort—road improvements with vegetation clearing in Chimney Peak will continue until the end of September while fire mitigation work at Heavenly Mountain Resort is set through October. Drivers and visitors in the areas should follow instructions as temporary access restrictions and increased traffic are expected.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The state will get $375 million to expand high speed internet access statewide—this funding will boost connectivity for residents and businesses in the coming months.  2NEWS
  • Because of fewer staff and a lost vote for funding, several Washoe County libraries will close one day at a time starting this week with downtown Reno closing Friday, North Valleys on Saturday and Monday, and Sparks on Sunday—closures will last until October 10. Brad Bynum said the shortage of workers also cuts outreach programs and leaves many positions unfilled.  2NEWS
  • The second phase of the Sparks Boulevard Project will improve road capacity—adding sidewalks and other infrastructure to make the road safer for everyone. The project will boost travel and safety on this key road.  2NEWS
  • The Nevada gun background check system was restored at 8 a.m. Sunday after a cyberattack kept it offline for several weeks—Governor Joe Lombardo thanked the Governor’s Technology Office and Department of Public Safety, and licensed dealers can now submit checks electronically. Reno gun store owners said the outage slowed sales and affected service to customers.  KRNV
  • Washoe County libraries will temporarily close on set dates due to staffing shortages—Downtown Reno Library on September 19, October 3 and October 10, North Valleys Library on September 20 and September 22, and Sparks Library on September 21, September 28 and October 5.  KRNV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Extreme heat in Nevada has led to soaring power bills and over 32,000 utility disconnections in 2024, forcing residents like Jacqueline Banderas to face high costs and health risks. Lawmakers and health officials at the EcoMadres’ 2nd Annual Summit urged action through measures such as Assembly Bill 96—aimed at urban cooling—to better protect vulnerable community members.  Reno Gazette Journal
