BUSINESS NEWS

  • Palisades Tahoe will add better snowmaking equipment, improved parking and new lift access gates (to ease guest flow) as the season begins on November 26 (with Pressure Drop premiering on October 10 and the Warren Miller Film Tour showing on October 29 and 30) to boost guest experience.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees talked about more students missing school since the pandemic and said that many kids did not come because they lacked shoes or a trusted adult—so a special task force was made. The superintendent also said September is now Deaf Awareness Month to help hearing-impaired students.  2NEWS
  • The University of Nevada, Reno's Aerospace Club launched its rocket Horizon in the Black Rock Desert, reaching 16,850 feet despite a main energy failure and recovering all parts for reuse. The club plans to conduct further tests soon—supported by a $5,000 donation from Voyager—as part of its new Aerospace Engineering program.  2NEWS
  • KUNR’s Youth Media program is training high school reporters during the fall semester and spotlighting students from local schools like Reno High School, Damonte Ranch and Procter Hug High School—Lela Lennon, Anthony Angelopoulos, Addison Gwin and Kaitlyn De La Torre-Jackson—who will produce interviews, audio diaries, commentaries and news stories for KUNR. The program gives these students a chance to develop their journalism skills and share their unique perspectives with the community.  KUNR

  • Drivers in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center will face nighttime lane closures and detours on USA Parkway starting Sunday — local officials urge drivers to plan extra time.  2NEWS
  • Eddie Lorton announced his candidacy for Reno mayor today—marking his third bid after previous runs in 2018 and 2022 against Mayor Hillary Schieve, and he will now compete with former lieutenant governor Kate Marshall and city councilwoman Kathleen Taylor. Lorton brings a strong background in real estate and business to his campaign for the city's future.  KRNV
  • Washoe County commissioners met this week to update election planning for elections in 2026 — the county is working to improve vote center access and update voter lists after nearly 400,000 ballots were cast by mail in 2024. The update aims to ensure safe and transparent election administration — a key goal for county officials.  2NEWS
  • Demolition of the former homeless shelter on Record Street began on July 15 and is set to finish on November 24 — just before Thanksgiving. The project clears the way for Ulysses Development Group to build 136 affordable housing units once they secure the necessary grant funds.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • On Wednesday, the Reno City Council unanimously voted to move forward with an ordinance for Accessory Dwelling Units on properties with at least 5,000 square feet. The new rule is expected to guide future developments and set clear standards for qualifying properties.  2NEWS
  • On September 10th, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office provided safety tips for hikers at Hunter Creek Trail (after recent thefts) and urged visitors to secure valuables and stay alert.  2NEWS

  • Renown Health and Kaiser Permanente announced a joint venture to launch Kaiser Permanente Nevada, with enrollment set to begin next year and plans available in 2027. Pending regulatory approval, the partnership will invest in three new clinics to expand services while current hospitals remain unchanged — a move expected to bring national expertise to local care.  2NEWS
