COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Wind Drive-In in Reno-Sparks will host its bi-annual free movie night on September 18 with films, music, and bounce houses for families. Gates open at 6 p.m. and movies start at 8 p.m. so guests are advised to arrive early due to limited parking.  KRNV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Several bars and restaurants are planned as part of the RenoRevival project at the former Harrah's Reno hotel-casino — Fine Entertainment is designing venues such as The George, PKWY Tavern, BLVD Grille, and The Mint, a retro bar with gaming. The remodel is underway and will bring new dining and nightlife options to Reno.  Reno Gazette Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded on September 7 after 8:30 p.m. to a shooting at Inova Apartments near Summit Mall when a verbal argument turned violent and gunfire killed a 20-year-old and a 29-year-old while a 23-year-old was injured — investigators have identified all involved and are asking witnesses to come forward.  KRNV
  • Reno man George Claros received a life sentence with parole possible after 45 years for charges that include kidnapping, sexual assault and battery—his trial recounted a violent attack on a 52-year-old woman in November 2021.  KRNV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hot air balloons of many shapes and colors took off at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park on Sept. 7 during the 2025 Great Reno Balloon Race. Race organizers said the event will expand to four days in 2026—giving local families more time to enjoy the show.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • BLM confirmed that the R-14 Buffalo Fire northwest of Gerlach burned 1,286 acres and is now fully contained. Crews used aircraft, dozers — and hand crews to secure the area and protect nearby historic buildings.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District lifted fire restrictions on outdoor recreational and cooking fires effective immediately, allowing charcoal briquettes, outdoor wood fires confined to fireplaces and fire pits, and the use of small equipment powered by internal combustion engines — however, pile burning and bonfires remain banned. Residents should check with park and campground operators for local fire rules.  2NEWS
  • A statewide report found that nearly 3,000 youths experienced homelessness last year—only 430 shelter beds exist and none are in 15 rural counties—showing that state funding and infrastructure are short; the report urges officials to invest in permanent housing and basic income supports to help affected youth. It recommends dedicated state funding and new policies to secure lasting housing stability.  Reno Gazette Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • CVS confirmed it will soon offer the updated COVID vaccine in Nevada after new guidance was issued Friday by the Nevada Board of Pharmacy and a spokesperson said vaccines will be available as soon as possible—although no start date was given. State leaders are reviewing the guidance to decide if further action is needed—while the Board’s website remains offline due to a recent ransomware attack.  Reno Gazette Journal
