  • The Great Reno Balloon Race runs through Sunday at Rancho San Rafael Park as nearly 100 hot air balloons fill the sky today—making the event a colorful local display. The Irish Spirit balloon, piloted by Jason Smith, stands out with its bright colors and long history at the race.  KUNR
  • Living Stones Church purchased the former Riverside Century Theater at 11 N. Sierra St. in downtown Reno—launching the Reforma project to revitalize the Riverwalk District with new dining, retail, coffee, and event spaces. The church will remain a key tenant and hold worship gatherings at its current location during the design and construction phase.  KRNV

  • Firefighters made tremendous progress containing the R-14 Buffalo fire and are working to secure the area—local crews monitor weather shifts to prevent further spread.  2NEWS

  • Frontier Airlines will launch nonstop flights from Reno to Phoenix on November 22, with twice-weekly service from Reno-Tahoe International Airport as its third route since returning in March—this move comes as the airline expands while Spirit Airlines faces bankruptcy struggles.  Reno Gazette Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Virginia City hosts the 66th annual International Camel and Ostrich Races this weekend; Hot Camel Nights occurred Friday at 5 p.m. while today brings shows at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. plus a camel parade from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.—Sunday Family Day will feature free camel rides for the first 100 children.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Tahoe Fund and Restoring the Lake Depths Foundation completed the first-ever livestream of an ROV dive that reached nearly 1,600 feet down to Lake Tahoe's bottom on Friday morning — over 3,500 viewers watched as experts, including Professor Sudeep Chandra, explained the lake's unique features.  KRNV

  • The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District lifted fire restrictions on outdoor recreational and cooking fires for residential properties today—open pile burning and bonfires remain banned.  2NEWS
  • September is National Preparedness Month and local fire officials, including Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran, urge residents to stock emergency supplies—food, water, and medications—and map clear evacuation routes for high fire-risk areas.
