BUSINESS NEWS

  • NV Energy said an underground equipment failure caused a power outage in south Reno early Friday at 5:30 a.m.—nearly 1,600 customers lost power in three zip codes. The report did not say where or why the failure happened.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were arrested on Thursday after a routine traffic stop revealed large quantities of drugs headed for Burning Man, and Yerington police confiscated more drugs on Wednesday while Pershing County plans to send 22 officers and 100 doses of Narcan to patrol the nine-day festival starting this Sunday — officials say these actions aim to combat drug distribution at the event.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • Yesterday, the Nevada Museum of Art held a ribbon cutting for its new wing—marking an expansion that will offer updated exhibit spaces for local art.  2NEWS

  • Baby’s Bounty, Nevada’s only consistent diaper resource, will hold its Diapers for Diplomas event on August 25 and 26 at its Center for Families in Sparks — offering parenting students 200 diapers per month if they register on the Baby’s Bounty website to qualify as enrolled students. The event aims to help remove a barrier for students continuing their education.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Oceanic explorer and conservationist Jean-Michael Cousteau is at Lake Tahoe with environmental groups to push for stronger measures to protect the lake and clean its waters. He will speak tomorrow at University of Nevada Tahoe Campus as part of the League's 2025 Speaker Series.  2NEWS
  • The Energy Information Administration said solar power will make up half of all the new electricity in the US in 2025, even as federal rules hold up projects on public lands and delay plans like Nevada’s Boulder Solar III. Nevada Gov. Lombardo said solar power is key for the state’s economic future as other states like Texas add more energy from storage, wind, and natural gas—all helping meet growing demand.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • An ethics review panel found credible evidence that Lieutenant Governor Stavros Anthony potentially violated ethics laws, and the report was released on August 20. The panel said corrective actions including ethics training and a new social media policy could address the allegations—pending full commission review.  2NEWS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mosquitoes—known as the world's deadliest animal—are increasing in Nevada as urban changes bring more standing water, and Northern Nevada Public Health has been monitoring activity in Reno with 12 traps while postponing its helicopter treatment in April due to budget concerns. The agency urges residents to remove standing water, use repellents, and report heavy mosquito activity at 775-328-2434.  Reno Gazette Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition is underway at the former homeless shelter off Record Street as the Reno City Council covers a $700,000 demolition cost—this step is part of its plan to sell the property to Ulysses Development Group for 136 affordable housing units. The agreement allows the developer to extend the sale until December 2026, with the city later being reimbursed up to $670,000 after the sale closes in December.  KRNV
