CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday night, a man died after being stabbed at John Champion Park at 957 Kuenzli Street in Reno—police responded at 10:50 p.m., provided emergency treatment until REMSA arrived, and the suspect remains at large.  KRNV
  • The Washoe County Sheriff's Office reported a new phone scam in which fraudsters pose as mortgage lenders or government agencies and pressure people into taking urgent action on their home loans—residents are advised to verify calls by contacting their mortgage providers directly.  2NEWS
  • A runaway teenager missing since mid-July was found safe on August 10 after she was last seen near Silverada Boulevard, according to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).  2NEWS

  • On Sunday, the final day of Hot August Nights at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, vintage vehicles competed for awards including a $5,000 grand prize—highlighted by a 1966 Volkswagen restored over 15 years by its owner Alex Hernandez and his family. Executive Director Deny Dotson said he will begin planning next summer's event after a brief rest.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new Climate Central report revealed that extreme heat streaks had become more frequent in Mountain West cities, with places like Denver and Colorado Springs facing several more streaks than in the 1970s. Experts in Reno warned that older homes built without air conditioning now face higher cooling demands and stressed power grids (which could increase blackout risks) as temperatures rise.  KUNR
