COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Gold Ribbon Bowl will run from noon to 2 p.m. this Sunday, August 10 at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, where families and friends can bowl for a cause with $50 lane admissions that include shoe rentals and bowling balls. Proceeds will support the Northern Nevada Children’s Cancer Foundation in providing emotional support, financial aid, and scholarships to local children with cancer—strengthening critical community programs.  2NEWS

  • Claire's filed for bankruptcy on August 6 as the company struggles with rising costs and online competition—18 stores will close by Sept. 7 while the Meadowood Mall location in Reno is not scheduled to close.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Wing Zone, a fast-casual chicken restaurant owned by Raj and Namit Rai, will open its first Reno location at 705 N. Virginia St., Suite 120 on Aug. 19. The new restaurant will offer free samples and special deals with every order—introducing chicken wings in four heat levels, a 1-pound Widow Maker burger and funnel cake fries.  Reno Gazette Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Two Sparks parents, 22-year-old Giovonnye Hart and 23-year-old Hailey Moniz, were arrested on August 7 and charged with murder and child neglect after their 3-month-old son died on April 5 from severe malnutrition and dehydration—investigators later reported unsanitary conditions and a lack of running water at their home.  KRNV
  • Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance said at a public safety meeting yesterday that the critical incident video from last month’s mass shooting at Grand Sierra Resort will be released within the next week—Sparks Police are leading the ongoing investigation.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County schools begin the 2025-26 year with a new high school campus, Debbie Smith CTE (costing $172 million), set to open Monday and enroll 700 students with updated career and technical programs. Twenty-one schools have new principals and bus cameras (established by Assembly Bill 527) will soon monitor drivers who do not stop at bus stops.  Reno Gazette Journal
