- ➤ Cosmos in the Desert festival will take place on Saturday, August 16th from 8 p.m. to midnight at Beach 3 in Lahontan State Recreation Area, offering stargazing, guided wildlife walks, virtual reality experiences, astrophotography demos and night sky talks. The event—organized by the Nevada Division of State Parks and the Division of Outdoor Recreation—will also provide a flashlight conversion booth and food and drink from a local food truck. 2NEWS

- ➤ Washoe County School District celebrated the ribbon-cutting for Debbie Smith CTE Academy on the site of former Hug High, a project that brings nine Career and Technical Education programs and an adult learning center to local students. Doors will open on August 11 to start hands-on classes + a mural honoring the late State Senator marks her lasting impact. KUNR

- ➤ Yesterday, lawmakers, tribal leaders and environmental advocates met at Valhalla Tahoe for the 29th annual Tahoe Summit to discuss boosting climate resilience, reducing wildfire risks and securing federal funds for protecting the Lake Tahoe Basin. Legislators outlined proposals for improved recreation sites, new boat speed restrictions and efforts to stop invasive species—measures intended to safeguard local ecosystems and manage parking at recreational areas. - ➤ The National Interagency Fire Center raised the fire preparedness level to 4 to help local agencies share extra resources as wildfires increase. Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District noted today that a four-person crew is on route to Wyoming to support a fire — and that fire restrictions remain in effect in Washoe County. KRNV
- ➤ Today, the City of Reno launched a pilot project to improve pedestrian safety near Libby Booth Elementary School by painting a colorful asphalt mural and installing pedestrian bulb-outs to calm traffic. The mural, painted by local artist Nathaniel Benjamin & designed with input from students, will be unveiled on Friday and was funded with $11,600 from the City’s Street Fund. 2NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Reno traffic is heavy this week as Virginia Street is closed for Hot August Nights from Aug. 5 at 8 a.m. until Aug. 11 at 5 p.m.—and roads between West First Street and Island Avenue are blocked for the Arlington Bridge project, expected to finish summer 2026. Reno Gazette Journal
