  • The third annual Purple Heart Honor and Recognition Dinner was held Sunday night at the Atlantis Hotel and Casino in Reno—53 Purple Heart veterans were honored in a ceremony that featured a cake cutting by the youngest and oldest recipients.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Reno Fire Department said Sunday’s Ridge Fire, which occurred in Cold Springs when a UTV rolled over and ignited nearby brush, was limited from about 10 acres to roughly 4.7 acres as crews mopped up the scene—UTV owners are cooperating with investigators and neighbors are advised to steer clear.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • The Washoe County Sheriff's Office Inmate Work Crew removed eight abandoned boats off the Mustang exit this week — the cleanup lowers risks of pollution, fire hazards, and crime in the area.  KRNV

  • The 39th annual Hot August Nights classic car show took place at 11:00 p.m. in Truckee Meadows—local car owners showed off their classic vehicles and shared memories of past models.  2NEWS

  • Molina Healthcare of Nevada hosted a back-to-school event at Sparks Fellowship Church — free school supplies were given to help students and families get ready for the upcoming school year.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Truckee Meadows Fire Rescue said the Peavine Fire was 35% contained after crews worked overnight to secure the west and south sides and lift evacuations. Union Pacific Railroad is repairing a damaged rail line today — NV Energy said power has been restored and no injuries or building losses were reported.  2NEWS

  • Today, over 300 people attended the event at Bonanza Casino—'Cruisin' for the Cure'—a fundraiser that charged $25 per car and had the casino match the funds to support research for prostate cancer.  2NEWS
