  • Meadowood Mall's JCPenney in Reno is part of a $947 million sale of 119 JCPenney stores nationwide to Onyx Partners, Ltd. announced on July 25; the deal will close on Sept. 8 and will use the funds to pay JCPenney creditors following its bankruptcy reorganization.  Reno Gazette Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Suspected GSR shooter Dakota Hawver—26 is in critical condition in a local hospital where armed officers guard his room after police shot him on July 28 following an incident at the GSR valet area and parking lot that killed three and he will be arrested once a doctor clears him to leave.  Reno Gazette Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The annual Great Reno Balloon Race will color north Reno’s skies from Sept. 5 to Sept. 7 at Ranch San Rafael Regional Park. Pilot Aaron Dieringer offers behind-the-scenes insights as the event will feature mass ascensions, dawn patrol activities and the Super Glow Show—promising an exciting display for all ages.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources warned that Washoe Lake is under a harmful algal bloom advisory after visual and satellite imagery showed a possible bloom along the shoreline — officials advise against contact with discolored or odorous water. Lake Lahontan has been under a harmful algal bloom warning since July 1 with tests underway by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection to monitor cyanobacteria.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Nevada State Parks placed Washoe Lake under a Harmful Algal Bloom Watch Advisory—water tests by the NDEP are underway to check for toxic algae that can cause health problems in people and animals—and they advise residents to avoid water that appears discolored or smells bad and to keep pets away.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Reno City Council last week approved a review of child care ordinances to find ways to speed up the permit process, and city staff will gather feedback and best practices from other cities — a move aimed at addressing high fees and long wait times. There is no set timeline for when any new ordinance may be adopted.  Reno Gazette Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Reno Aces will host the 9th Annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20 at Greater Nevada Field — the event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day in partnership with Vitalant. Donors can choose between a Power Red donation, which safely returns platelets and plasma, and a Whole Blood donation — walk-ins are welcome though appointments are recommended.  KRNV
