  • The Sparks Fire Department is hosting a wildfire preparedness course for homeowners at the TMCC Meadowood Center from August 4 to 7, with sessions held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Retired fire captain Bill Steward will lead the $125 course — which uses examples like the 2024 Davis Fire to teach home protection techniques.  2NEWS
  • LEAD with Horses is hosting its fourth annual Horses and Harmony concert today (at 19440 Annie Lane) in Reno to support equine-assisted counseling and education programs. The event will feature live music by Decoy, local BBQ and refreshments, and both silent and live auctions (with the live auction set for 7:00 p.m.).  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A vegetation fire has spread to 15 acres off Chickadee Drive — between Hungry Valley and Lemmon Valley — with visible smoke while firefighters use air support including one Air Attack aircraft and two Single Engine Air Tankers as no structures are in danger.  KRNV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Members of the Nevada National Guard's 17th Sustainment Brigade returned to Reno after serving in the Middle East for ten months+ they now join the local community after their long deployment.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Juan Sanchez-Juarez, Chief Warrant Officer with the Nevada Army National Guard, returned to Reno on Saturday after a 10-month deployment in the Middle East — family and friends greeted him and 30 other soldiers at the airport — and he now looks forward to quiet time with loved ones. His unit from the 17th Sustainment Brigade, which carried out over 300 operations in 13 countries during its first international deployment in nine years, will hold a modest celebration at home later this week — a relief after a challenging mission — before resuming regular duties.  KRNV
