ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out in the North Valleys on Tuesday evening, displacing three people, sending one to the hospital, and killing one dog.  2NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nevada Museum of Art has decided not to move the Seven Magic Mountains sculpture from Las Vegas to Washoe County, and Washoe County will reallocate the $500,000 grant to fund renovations at a local behavioral health facility—this issue will be discussed at an upcoming board meeting.  KRNV
  • Grammy-winning rock artist Ozzy Osbourne died Tuesday at 76 after reuniting with Black Sabbath, and he had strong ties to Reno from his three 1980s performances — including recording part of his 1995 album at Granny’s House.  Reno Gazette Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation released its June economic report that showed the state’s unemployment rate was 5.4% and Reno’s rate was 4.6%—a drop of 0.1% from May. The report also found that White Pine County had the lowest rate at 4.1% while Mineral County’s rate reached 11.4%.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County will offer free rides on Saturday to honor the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The commission is also planning ADA-compliant road project improvements—emphasizing its ongoing efforts to serve eligible riders.  2NEWS
  • Reno Police Department, Reno Fire Department and Washoe County School District Police are holding a two-day active attacker training drill at North Valleys High School on East Golden Valley Road; the exercise runs today and tomorrow during daylight hours—residents are advised not to call emergency services since the activity is a simulation.  2NEWS
  • County officials announced on July 22 that all Washoe residents paying sewer bills were automatically enrolled in the Smart911 emergency alert system to deliver targeted warnings during emergencies. Residents receive a bill notice about the enrollment and may add extra contact details (such as preferred phone numbers) to help first responders.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Today the City of Reno filed a memo that outlines improvements to W. 7th Street after residents raised concerns about higher crash rates from heavy traffic and the road's design — the memo details completed projects such as flashing directional arrows and intersection changes as well as upcoming work on pedestrian beacons, new streetlights, crosswalk upgrades, ADA ramps, and bike lanes.  2NEWS
