COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Empowerment Center—serving people and families in substance-abuse treatment—celebrated its expanded housing option, which will soon offer more support and resources for clients. The center plans to add further services as the need for stable housing grows.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person was injured in a house fire on Fieldcrest Drive in Sparks on Thursday night — firefighters responded with four engines, one truck and a battalion chief while REMSA sent two ambulances.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, a multi-vehicle crash on Veterans Parkway in Reno left one person dead and two injured, and deputies responded at (10:45 a.m.) as the sheriff’s major accident team began investigating the cause.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Riley Bawcom and Ashley Decarie were arrested on July 16 in Reno after detectives found them with a stolen Toyota Tacoma and evidence linking Bawcom to a $600 ammunition theft at Cabela’s—Bawcom now faces multiple charges while Decarie is booked on controlled substance possession and larceny.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A lightning-sparked Hot Canyon Fire was reported 75% contained — covering just under 13,000 acres, according to officials.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Senate passed a bill that slashes $1.1 billion in public broadcasting funds and sent it to the House, and if approved and signed then PBS Reno and KUNR will lose about 17 percent of their federal funding—potentially impacting local news and rural outreach with changes taking effect on September 30. The stations plan to boost fundraising efforts and adjust their operations to cover the shortfall.  2NEWS
  • Tomorrow, July 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department will distribute over 1,500 backpacks and school supplies to local children at the Boys and Girls Club on 9th Street (as part of the 6th annual Christmas in July event). The event will also feature carnival games for students and offer resources for parents.  KUNR
