- ➤ A dedicated American Red Cross volunteer from northern Nevada has begun a 21-day deployment to Manitoba to help shelter over 12,500 people displaced by severe wildfires. The Minden volunteer is stationed at the Fort Garry campus of the University of Manitoba — additional shelters will soon open as officials manage wildfires that have burned 2.5 million acres. KRNV

- ➤ Mellow Fellow, a well-loved downtown Reno restaurant near Greater Nevada Field, will close on August 30 because it did not reach a new lease agreement after a decade of operation. The announcement thanked patrons for their support + left open the possibility of a future return. KRNV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An investigation began after a person was stabbed near the Virginia Street bridge downtown early Monday morning. A local heat advisory remains in effect until 11 AM PDT Wednesday—forecast high temperatures may reach 106 in lower areas and near 100 in valley sites. 2NEWS
- ➤ Eight suspects indicted for vandalism at Reno High will appear in Second Judicial District Court this Thursday—investigators completed a 100-page probe with 30 hours of video and 27 suspect interviews—and face charges for property obstruction with one accused of lighting a tire on fire. 2NEWS
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers extended the Outdoor Education and Recreation Grant Program to provide $500,000 over two years for youth outdoor learning — covering transportation and educational activities with organizations able to apply for grants starting Aug. 1. Kendal Scott from the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation said the program has already supported 45 projects and is designed to help kids build a connection with nature. KUNR

- ➤ The Empowerment Center, a sober living facility in Reno for low-income and at-risk women recovering from substance abuse, will receive over $960,000 to install rooftop solar panels—making it the first project under the Solar for All program—and lower its utility costs. Reno Gazette Journal
- ➤ The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and Incline Village General Improvement District began the two-phase Worm wildfire fuels mitigation project above Mt. Rose Highway, with phase one treating 64.5 acres over four to five weeks and phase two, covering 78.1 acres, set to finish in summer 2026. Burnbot Inc. will start operating remotely controlled mastication machines next week to reduce wildfire risk and create a 132 foot wide buffer zone (improving access for firefighters and protecting nearby homes). 2NEWS
