ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new USGS report shows that untapped geothermal energy in the Great Basin could supply 10% of the nation’s electricity but now produces less than 1%—engineers must develop cost-effective methods using techniques like enhanced geothermal systems. The report also noted that federal agencies have already begun testing these methods with a $40 million project in southwest Utah completed last year. KUNR

- ➤ The Nevada DMV and Washoe County Sheriff’s Office warned residents not to click on scam texts that ask for payment for traffic tickets, saying the DMV sends messages only via certified email, mail, or appointment reminders. - ➤ The Nevada Division of Welfare and Supportive Services announced that SNAP applicants must now show proof of shelter and utility costs—using current utility bills and a lease, mortgage statement or rental receipts—when applying for food stamps. - ➤ Reno’s Sierra Nevada Job Corps shows strong local results with a 51% graduation rate and low incident reports compared to national data, as it enrolled 394 students from July 1 to June 5.
