COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reno’s Domestic Violence Resource Center announced plans for a new 40,000-square-foot shelter with 42 rooms and 100 beds to quadruple its current 25-bed facility, with demolition starting this summer and groundbreaking expected this fall for an opening in early 2027 (the largest shelter in Northern Nevada). Survivors can still call the center’s hotline at 775-329-4150 (for immediate assistance).  KUNR

CRIME NEWS

  • Washoe County School District police investigated an incident at Billinghurst Middle School on Thursday when a (swastika) was found carved into the grass, covered up, and removed as officials considered possible discipline and criminal charges.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of Nevada high schools today using data on test scores, graduation rates, and Advanced Placement participation — the report names top Reno schools such as Academy of Art Careers and Technology and Coral Academy High School.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • U.S. News & World Report released rankings of Nevada’s best performing elementary schools using state test scores in math and reading. The list names top Reno schools including Ted Hunsberger Elementary, Caughlin Ranch Elementary, and Roy Gomm Elementary.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Washoe County School District did not say if it will ban Reno High students from graduation after a May 22 break-in that involved vandalism and graffiti, noting that past incidents—even lesser in nature—have led to suspension and loss of graduation privileges—discipline decisions that are shaped by multiple factors under federal privacy laws.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • U.S. News and World Report ranked Nevada middle schools using state test data—scores in math and reading show how local schools in Reno and Sparks compare statewide; parents now see that Mount Rose K-8 Academy of Languages and Darrel Swope Middle School earned top marks.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Saturday morning through Sunday evening due to gusty winds, low humidity and a chance for isolated dry lightning. Residents in affected areas including parts of the Sierra front and Lahontan Basin are urged to avoid activities that could spark fires.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada does not have a state law on the minimum age for leaving children home alone, but Reno code requires that children under 10 be supervised—experts and the National SAFE KIDS Campaign advise checking a child’s maturity and emergency access before leaving them unsupervised.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Assembly Bill 375 passed the Assembly on Thursday with a vote of forty-one to one and now moves to the state senate for review. If passed, the law will let food delivery services include sealed mixed drinks with meals and add a surcharge to support the Ignition Interlock Program — it also names Picon Punch as Nevada’s official state drink.  KRNV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health reported that 147 of 173 seasonal pools in Washoe County received permits—a rate of 85% that improved from 77% last year. Officials also added an online booking site to help fill inspection times and ensure safe water quality.  KRNV
