CRIME NEWS

  • Authorities said a marked red 2003 Ford F-150 was stolen from a fuels management project site near Lockwood Monday morning and Nevada State Police pursued it along Highway 395 before calling off the chase near Lemmon Valley for safety reasons — the truck carries plate #EX 44633.  2NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 20th, local tailor Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss received a patent for riveted blue jeans after a customer asked for stronger work pants made of duck cloth. Their invention quickly spread—changing workwear and leaving a lasting mark on Reno’s history.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • On Monday, May 19th, a local organization hosted a bike obstacle course to help students learn bike safety during Bike Month—Safe Routes to School led the event—allowing all students to join regardless of biking experience.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nevada lawmakers advanced Senate Bill 89 that would bar anyone convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime from owning or buying a gun for up to 10 years—sponsored by Sen. Julie Pazina, the measure passed the Senate with a 12—8 vote and now heads to the Assembly.  KRNV
  • On May 18, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team found an elderly woman lost northwest of Gerlach after her GPS misled her. The team escorted her to refuel in Gerlach and then brought her to Fernley—where she rejoined her family.  2NEWS
  • The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on the proposed Dodge Flat II solar project near Wadsworth in Washoe County. The project covers 500 acres of public land and over 1,000 acres of private land and, if approved, Dodge Flat Energy Center, LLC will build a 200-megawatt solar facility with a battery storage system—comments on historical properties are also requested.  2NEWS

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Corner Minit Mart employee in Reno discovered counterfeit Zyn nicotine pouches on October 22 that tested at 4.5mg of nicotine and contained extra methyl nicotine compared to the expected 6mg. Philip Morris International and McKinney Specialty Labs reported their findings to the FDA while warnings urge consumers to check for off-set printing and blurry labels on the packaging.  KRNV
