COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families in need will be offered free laundry service on Wednesday, May 20 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Mr. Bubbles Laundromat, 4751 N. Virginia Street, where Molina Healthcare, Catholic Charities and Mr. Bubbles will provide washers plus detergent, dryer sheets and local support services.  2NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Jacobs Entertainment released a 3D rendering showing that the Reno Neon Line's next phase will include a 4,000-seat Vegas-style showroom in the new district. The project will boost local entertainment options soon.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Sparks teen composer Alex Loosley, 14, is studying music at UNR and had his piece Tahoe Shimmers performed at Harp Fest earlier this month—professors praised his talent and commitment as he builds a promising musical future.  KRNV
  • The Holland Project offers young Reno artists a safe space to share music, art & performance pieces while youth volunteers energize its events. The nonprofit also supports programs like Bloom open mic and Girls Rock Reno to foster emerging talent.  KUNR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School District has released a calendar listing key dates from the last day of school to graduation ceremonies and fall break, and parents are urged to review the schedule (with detailed dates) to plan accordingly.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Washoe County School District will end classes on Monday, June 8 (June 10 for Incline Village) with a half day and no early release on June 3 due to February snow days; classes will resume on Aug. 10 and fall break will run from Oct. 5-9.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • UNR’s TRIO Programs, including Upward Bound (a key component), support first-generation students with tutoring, college prep, and campus visits to overcome challenges and plan for college. The program serves local schools in Washoe and Lyon counties and may face funding uncertainty after 2027.  KUNR
  • At least 14 Washoe County School District schools will have new principals starting in August, with most changes at elementary schools in Sparks and Reno while Bernice Mathews Elementary School continues interviews for its new leader.  Reno Gazette Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System received extra funding in the second quarter to replace elevators and upgrade utility services at its Reno facility, with improvements planned along Kirman Avenue to keep the building safe for veterans.  2NEWS
  • Owners of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Nevada may face a new federal registration fee beginning in October (starting at $135 for EVs and $35 for hybrids, potentially rising to $150 and $50) as part of a bipartisan plan to support road funds.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • On Monday, May 18, J Resort in Reno completed its phase one projects and announced plans for a new 55-story tower — a development expected to reshape the local skyline.  2NEWS

  • High school lacrosse will be officially sanctioned by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association in spring 2027 after a decade of local advocacy. Schools must provide uniforms, coaches + fields to boost opportunities and recruiting for student athletes.  KUNR
