COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families experiencing homelessness or financial hardship in Reno will have access to a free pet wellness clinic on May 17 at the St. Vincent's Dining Room parking lot at 325 Valley Road where pets will be seen on a first come, first served basis and services include basic exams, vaccinations, microchipping, spay/neuter vouchers, pet food, supplies and human flu shots. Multiple local agencies — including Feeding Pets of the Homeless, Galena Veterinary Hospital, Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, Nevada Humane Society, Washoe County Housing and Homeless Services and Northern Nevada Public Health — are hosting the clinic from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • The City of Reno is planning to revoke downtown nightclub Two One Nine’s business licenses — formerly known as Eden Nightclub — after alleging its involvement in crimes from violent offenses to misdemeanors, with a show cause hearing rescheduled for May 27 so license holders can secure legal counsel.  2NEWS
  • ICE arrested Fernando Santos-Chavez in Reno for possessing meth for sale—he has been removed three times and now faces charges of illegal reentry while in custody.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Workers and school officials gathered for a topping off ceremony at the new Vaughn Middle School in Reno on May 9th where attendees signed a large iron beam before its installation. The event marked a key milestone in the building's progress — construction continues with further updates expected soon.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • The Washoe County School District is celebrating Bike Month this May with 25 events—such as safety lessons, bike parades, obstacle courses, and helmet blitzes—for over 2,000 students. School Police Chief Tracy Moore said the activities will help teach safe biking habits at school and at home.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials reported that the Dog Valley prescribed burn was completed after crews burned 576 acres, although smoke is expected to linger through the weekend—fire crews will remain on site to monitor the area.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tribal leaders and elected officials in Reno held a press conference Thursday to oppose an amendment by U.S. Representatives that would sell 10,000 acres in Utah and 450,000 acres near Reno and Las Vegas for affordable housing—despite claims it would generate $18 billion in revenue and savings. Critics warned the measure could affect Indigenous land rights and water resources, and the amendment will face a full House vote.  KUNR
  • The Washoe library board asked the county for a $1.3 million safety net for fiscal year 2026 to keep a flat budget and avoid layoffs — the board said it holds $3.5 million in reserves and plans no cuts in service. The county commission will review the proposal at its budget meeting on May 20.  Reno Gazette Journal
