- ➤ Reno Gazette Journal editor Brett McGinness invited locals to vote on ideas for urban upgrades that include pedestrian zones, a revamped riverfront and family-friendly attractions. - ➤ A memorial procession honoring Fire Engineer Neil Schnaible began Friday in Reno at Renown Regional Medical Center and traveled through Washoe Valley toward South Lake Tahoe. The private event allowed the community to pay respects safely along the route while a GoFundMe supports his family. 2NEWS

- ➤ On Friday, May 8, gas prices in Reno dropped by one cent to $5.46 a gallon, following a statewide trend of decreasing rates. 2NEWS

- ➤ Sparks High School was placed on Secured Campus on Friday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m., as police investigated a possible threat; the security measure ended by 1:40 p.m. with students and staff remaining safe. 2NEWS
- ➤ UNR officials said a cyber-attack that led students to see a ransom note on Canvas (from group Shinyhunters) is now resolved, and they are reviewing security protocols to prevent future incidents. 2NEWS
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Boaters at Lake Tahoe are reminded to arrive clean, drain, dry to save 50% on decontamination fees. Inspection stations in Meyers, Spooner Summit and Alpine Meadows operate daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.—appointments are recommended to speed up the process. 2NEWS

- ➤ The Nevada Department of Employment, Training & Rehabilitation will host three Rapid Response events at Reno EmployNV Business Hub to help former Spirit Airlines workers access unemployment benefits and career services. The events are slated for Tuesday, May 12; Tuesday, May 19; and Thursday, May 28. 2NEWS
- ➤ Reno’s planning commission approved a pilot program on May 8 that temporarily removes the indoor live music permit for new Midtown and downtown businesses. The city will track calls for service for 18 months before the City Council decides on a permanent change. Reno Gazette Journal
- ➤ Reno city leaders launched the ReSecure pilot, offering eligible downtown and midtown property owners up to $5,000 for security upgrades. Applications are open until June 15 and winners, who must complete improvements within 90 days and maintain them for two years, will be announced this summer (following recent beautification success). - ➤ Note-Able Music Therapy Services launched Take a Beat, a free year-long pilot offering twice-weekly music therapy groups for new parents to manage postpartum stress in Reno – the bilingual sessions welcome babies and siblings. KUNR
- ➤ Officials cautioned that although 2026's warmest weekend has begun, the Truckee River remains icy cold at about 50 degrees so residents planning water activities must use safety gear like helmets and flotation devices. KRNV
