Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.
Good morning, Reno.
Investigators determined that last year's Davis Fire in Davis Creek Regional Park, 15 miles south of Reno, started accidentally from an improperly extinguished campfire or warming fire — it resulted in the loss of 13 homes and a church after being reported on September 7th, 2024 at about 2:19 p.m. with full containment declared on September 25th, 2024.
Prices in the Silver State increased six cents per gallon since last week, and Reno gas stations have already raised their rates—reflecting a state-wide trend that could lead to higher fuel costs for local motorists.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office arrested three men for an extortion scheme—two were arrested in Genoa on May 2 when they arrived to pick up money and one was stopped in Gardnerville on May 7 when he attempted the same.
The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents approved Doctor Jeffrey Alexander as the new president for Truckee Meadows Community College after a nationwide search and community input—he will begin his role on July 1 as Doctor Karin Hilgersom retires on June 30.
A new bill, Senate Bill 350, would extend the time between a death warrant and an execution from 60 to 90 days to 180 to 270 days—giving lawyers more time to address legal issues and allowing corrections to properly prepare.
Lawmakers passed the measure in the Senate by a party-line vote, and the bill is now with the Assembly Judiciary Committee for review.
State lawmakers are considering a bill that would create a plan over five years for automatic annual pay raises for Nevada county elected officials who have not received a raise since 2018.
The measure uses formulas to set base salaries and cost of living adjustments, passed the Senate with a vote of 19 to 2, and received no action from the Assembly Committee on Government Affairs — leaving the future of the raises uncertain.
Smiles for Freedom will mark its 10th anniversary on May 16 at Sala Family Dentistry by providing free dental care to local veterans — the event will begin with a flag raising ceremony and National Anthem at 7:30 a.m. while dental services will be available by appointment from 8:00 a.m. to about 3:00 p.m.
Northern Nevada HOPES will launch a maternal program in July to support pregnant women with substance use issues and improve care by expanding access to prenatal, postpartum, behavioral and pediatric services—backed by a $708,000 donation.
