COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Northern Nevada residents can stamp out hunger by placing non-perishable food (no glass jars) near their mailbox this Saturday, May 9. The National Association of Letter Carriers will deliver donations to food banks in Lyon County, Carson Valley, Carson City, Dayton and Fallon.  2NEWS
  • Brandon, a Reno native, caught a 24-pound common carp at Sparks Marina over the weekend, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife praised his catch + noted that carp are common in local waters, inspiring others to sharpen their fishing skills.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out at 4:45 a.m. Monday morning at the Lyon’s Crest mobile home park in Reno, damaging two mobile homes, a garage, a shed, and a tree — displacing two families who received help from the American Red Cross, though no injuries were reported.  2NEWS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Reno-Sparks’ first Yard House will open on July 13 at The Outlets at Legends in Sparks, offering over 100 beers and a menu of American favorites and adventurous fare at 1160 Scheels Drive. The franchise has 100 locations and this is one of four new openings planned this summer.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Cook'd restaurant opened on May 4 at the former Napa Sonoma location (in south Reno) and now offers a fresh menu for local diners.  2NEWS
  • Spirit Airlines ended operations on May 2 due to a failed restructuring and rising oil prices — leaving some Reno-Tahoe International Airport travelers stranded and seeking alternative flights.  2NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices rose nationwide yesterday, and local prices in Reno increased, affecting drivers who now pay more for fuel. The report noted that the price hike continues as part of a broader trend affecting consumers.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grace Warner Elementary School ended its lockdown after an accidental alarm triggered a temporary closure — classes resumed normally on May 4 for students in Reno.  2NEWS
  • The Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation launches the 2026 Summer Youth Internship Program (from July 13 to August 7) and invites businesses to host fully funded internships for students with disabilities. Employers receive wages, workers' compensation, and disability awareness training, with a May 25 registration deadline.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washoe County released its Point in Time count on May 4 to gauge the number of people experiencing homelessness in the area. Officials said the count will help tailor local support services.  2NEWS
  • NV Energy will update its Natural Disaster Protection Plan for 2027 — 2029 to reduce wildfire risk by clearing vegetation near power lines and shutting them off during high winds, per state law. The Public Utilities Commission will review the plan which targets high-risk areas including Reno.  2NEWS
  • Two-way traffic was restored at the intersection of 1st Street and Arlington Avenue on May 4 + months of closures from nearby construction delayed the flow in Reno.  2NEWS
  • NDOT (Nevada Department of Transportation) reduced lanes on Reno roads on May 4, which led to moderate delays for drivers. Officials advised commuters to plan extra time for their trips.  2NEWS
