COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local experts will help residents spot scams at upcoming sessions at Northwest Reno and Sparks Libraries — Tim Johnston from the Better Business Bureau will lead these talks — and residents are encouraged to register online for details.  2NEWS
  • Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue quickly knocked down a small brush fire near Desert Skies Middle School in Sun Valley on Friday, May 1, and no buildings were damaged. The investigation is ongoing and officials reported the flames started in the hills north of the school.  2NEWS

  • Reno Tahoe International Airport advised passengers to check with Spirit Airlines for cancellations + other carriers serve the same routes if needed.  2NEWS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artown unveiled its 2026 festival poster (A Sky Written by Dreamers) on May 1, offering locals a sneak peek at the creative theme for the upcoming celebration.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washoe County School District canceled an early-release day on June 3 to make up for February snow days and will now have a half-day on Monday, June 8 for the last school day. Graduation ceremonies start on Tuesday, June 2 with events planned until Monday, June 15 at various schools.  Reno Gazette Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday morning near Fallon, a 4.1 quake hit and a 4.9 quake followed in a three-week swarm totaling more than 200 tremors. Nevada still lacks a statewide ShakeAlert early warning system — plans for expanding monitoring stations are being considered.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • The American Lung Association report shows many US children face unhealthy air, yet Reno’s fine particle pollution (PM2.5) improved. Other Mountain West cities continue to struggle with ozone levels driven by high heat and wildfire smoke.  KUNR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials introduced new SNAP benefit rules on May 1 that now put 27,000 Nevadans at risk of losing aid (the revised eligibility criteria aim to tighten benefits distribution).  2NEWS
  • A memorial service was held last night in Reno to honor former Mayor Jeff Griffin, who served from 1995 to 2002. Community members gathered to pay tribute to his long-lasting public service.  2NEWS
  • The Truckee Meadows Water Authority is addressing a water main break near Prater Way and Stanford Way in Sparks today—construction crews accidentally caused the break while digging. Repairs are underway as traffic is slowed by detours and some neighbors remain without water.  2NEWS

  • Northern Nevada Public Health is investigating cryptosporidiosis cases linked to a live animal yoga class held in Washoe County; officials advise participants to practice proper hygiene to reduce infection risks.  KRNV
  • Renown Children’s Hospital pediatric experts advise parents to watch for GI illness symptoms among children at five WCSD schools and one Echo Loder classroom. Schools have increased sanitation measures and issued tips via Connect Ed calls, while doctors say most children recover quickly with rest + hydration.  2NEWS
