  • On Thursday, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue rescued a frightened puppy trapped under a parked van in Stead—firefighters worked with Washoe County Regional Animal Services to free the pup safely and hope it will soon reunite with its family.  KRNV

  • Reno Fire crews quickly extinguished a motorhome fire near Orange and Plumb Lane on Friday morning — it remains unclear how the fire started.  2NEWS

  • Esteban Garcia was sentenced to life in prison without parole for fatally shooting Jennifer Beltran-Galassi during a custody exchange near Gepford Park in Sun Valley in 2023 (he also received 4 to 20 years for a deadly weapon enhancement).  Reno Gazette Journal
  • On Friday morning, protesters led by Ashley Viney gathered outside the Washoe County Child Services Agency in downtown Reno to demand justice for 5-year-old Izabella Loving after claims that the child protective system failed her and planned to return at 10 a.m. at 350 S. Center St. to push for Izabella's Law requiring more welfare checks in homes.  KRNV

  • Bishop Mueggenborg of the Reno Diocese said he felt deep sadness at Pope Francis’ death and recalled the 12 years they served together; over one million people will attend the funeral today — after which a nine-day mourning period begins and the Cardinals will choose a new Pope after May 6 — and he will travel to Rome to pay his respects.  KUNR

  • Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County launched a regional compost survey to collect local feedback on composting and waste reduction. The survey is available in English and Spanish and will accept responses until May 25.  2NEWS

  • The Nevada Gaming Commission approved a stipulated agreement on Thursday that fined MGM Resorts International $8.5 million after a complaint alleged the company allowed three illegal bookmakers to gamble at its properties on over 700 days—officials commended MGM’s longstanding culture of compliance despite the lapse. The measure reinforces the importance of employee responsibility across the gaming industry.  Reno Gazette Journal
