ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A FedEx cargo plane at Reno Tahoe Airport experienced a possible right engine fire issue before takeoff tonight+ fire crews responded quickly, inspected the aircraft, and the plane returned to the gate for a detailed safety review with no injuries reported.  KRNV
  • A motorcyclist died after a crash with a vehicle at the intersection of Villanova Drive and Harvard Way in Reno Wednesday at 7:04 p.m.—police said alcohol was not a factor and they are investigating whether speed played a role.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • A backcountry skier was rescued over the weekend after suffering a broken femur in deep snow at 8,000 feet—rescue crews responded promptly to secure the injured skier.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Sonner, 57, who was on death row for killing Nevada trooper Carlos Borland in 1993, died on April 23 at High Desert State Prison near Indian Springs—his autopsy was requested and his family has been notified.  KRNV
  • Two people were arrested in Storey County when the Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant on Thursday morning at a property on Wild Horse Canyon in the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Complex, where a stolen gun, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found.  2NEWS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • North Valleys High School received the Purple Star School Award for its support of the military (an honor recognizing its commitment to serving military families) on April 24, and the award highlights the school’s dedication to the armed forces.  2NEWS

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Galena Fire Mitigation Project will reduce dry vegetation in Reno to lower wildfire risks—officials expect this effort to improve community safety.  2NEWS

  • Reno City Council reviewed a draft ordinance today that would allow one accessory dwelling unit on lots larger than 9,000 square feet in single-family zones—staff will update the plan based on resident feedback before it reaches the Planning Commission.  KRNV
  • On April 24th, 2025, the Reno City Council moved forward with plans for the Lakeridge Apartment Complex—following a 2021 approval by the Planning Commission of a tentative map and a conditional use permit.  2NEWS
