BUSINESS NEWS

  • Uline is building a 286,000–square-foot warehouse at 6125 Echo Ave in north Reno to meet growing demand, with the new facility set to open in August and increase its local footprint to 1.2 million square feet. The company held a hiring event on Tuesday, April 22 at its current facility on Military Road to fill about 25 positions offering wages between $25 and $32 per hour along with health insurance and a 401(k) match.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • On Monday, Sparks Police arrested 32-year-old Jeffery Myers after he tried to steal merchandise from Scheels in Sparks and booked him on charges of petit larceny, drug paraphernalia, and criminal contempt.  2NEWS
  • Police found Sparks High art teacher Carla Gonzales nearly decapitated at her home Saturday night in Reno—her 20-year-old son Carson Gonzales faces murder and attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking her friend, and his bail hearing was postponed to Wednesday.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • On April 19, Reno police responded to 911 calls at 2652 Powder Drive when a family argument escalated into a stabbing that fatally injured Sparks High art teacher Carla Gonzales and left her friend critically injured—while her 20-year-old son, Carson, was arrested for allegedly using a knife.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Lyrid meteor shower is at its peak in Northern Nevada and will continue through April 26, giving stargazers 10-20 meteors per hour under nearly ideal conditions with a half-filled moon not rising until 3:30 a.m. — making dark sky spots near Reno excellent for viewing.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • The DMV announced that walk-ins for Real ID will be allowed on Tuesdays and Thursdays during specific hours—this move expands options for Reno drivers needing ID services.  2NEWS
  • Reno City Council will hear the appeal for a 273-unit apartment complex proposal at the former Lakeridge Tennis Club today at 6 p.m. after a 90-day pause that allowed neighbors to voice concerns over traffic and fire evacuation risks — some residents say the project should match the neighborhood's character.  Reno Gazette Journal
  • Local fire departments in Reno worked on a plan to combine resources and improve emergency response times – Makayla Hardy attended a meeting on April 22 to discuss the updates.  2NEWS
  • Residents near Hunter Lake Elementary protested the planned Jiffy Lube at the corner of Mayberry and Hunter Lake drives because they worry traffic will become even more dangerous—city staff will review public comments and permit details while the developer claims the oil change shop will generate about 42 car trips a day. Several neighbors and local officials stressed that school safety and peak traffic hours must be prioritized if the project moves forward.  Reno Gazette Journal

  • The Washoe County School District and Northern Nevada Public Health are holding after‐school immunization clinics for students age 9 and older to receive required or catch‐up vaccines. Vaccines include MMR, hepatitis A+B, HPV, meningococcal, Tdap and varicella, with a clinic held today from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Damonte Ranch High School (10500 Rio Wrangler Pkwy) and another planned for May 29 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Wooster High School (1331 E.
