COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Reno’s Parks and Recreation Department is launching its free eight-week Rolling Recreation Program today through June 14 at Barbara Bennett Park (400 Island Avenue) in downtown Reno. The program offers family-friendly games and activities with sessions on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.  2NEWS

CRIME NEWS

  • A 20-year-old man was arrested on April 19th after he allegedly stabbed two women on Powder Drive in Reno—one was pronounced dead and the other is in critical condition.  2NEWS
  • Reno police arrested 20-year-old Carson Gonzalez on Saturday night after he fatally stabbed his 52-year-old mother and critically injured a 46-year-old woman at a Powder Drive home in northwest Reno — he now faces charges of open murder with a deadly weapon, battery with a deadly weapon, and obstructing and resisting an officer.  Reno Gazette Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees meets today at 2 p.m. at 425 E. Ninth St. to review preliminary results of the Phone Away & Learn Today pilot program, which was launched in January to manage cellphone use during class—using data from surveys, staff feedback, and student focus groups.  KRNV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Regional Transportation Commission and the city of Reno announced that starting May 5, Arlington Avenue between West 1st and Island will be closed for a project to replace century-old bridges over the Truckee River at Wingfield Park. Northbound traffic will be rerouted via Virginia while southbound traffic and pedestrians will use Sierra—work will finish by summer 2026 with improved safety and an Art Deco design selected by the community.  KRNV
  • Starting May 5, the RTC in partnership with the City of Reno will replace the historic Arlington Avenue Bridges over the Truckee River at Wingfield Park—detouring northbound traffic to Virginia Street and southbound traffic to Sierra Street with additional closures at key intersections. The project will finish in summer 2026 while park access remains limited during construction.  2NEWS

HEALTH NEWS

  • The second annual Biggest Little Skin Cancer Screening will take place on May 7 at Greater Nevada Field between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.—offering free skin cancer checks to about 200 people, especially those without health insurance—and local physicians led by Dr. Whitney Hovenic will help arrange follow-up care if suspicious lesions are found.  KRNV
