EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Washoe County School District board voted 5 to 2 Tuesday to interview Deputy Superintendent Tiffany McMaster as its only internal candidate to replace retiring Superintendent Ernst.   • The Washoe County School District Board of Trustees ended a 17-year ban on new swing sets Tuesday evening as part of a 15-year facility modernization plan, and schools will now include swing sets and expanded shade structures.  2NEWS
  • The Boys & Girls Club of Mason Valley plans a new Silver Springs campus to include a clubhouse and early learning center for children after outgrowing their current school space — leaders hope to break ground by year-end as fundraising continues.  KRNV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A bear became trapped inside a car in Incline Village when a vehicle owner opened the door, causing significant damage as the bear dashed away. Authorities advise residents to secure food and scented items because bear activity is increasing in the Tahoe Basin.  KRNV
  • From Thursday evening through Friday morning, a freeze watch is in effect across the Greater Reno-Carson City-Minden Area as temperatures are forecast to fall to 26 to 30 degrees in urban areas and 20 to 25 in rural spots; residents should protect crops, tender plants, and outdoor plumbing.  2NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roblox agreed on Wednesday to enhance safety for young users and pay over $12 million to state funds that will support nondigital youth programs and a law enforcement liaison position. The settlement will include measures like age verification + limits on nighttime notifications.  2NEWS
  • Washoe County Child Advocacy Center hosted a pinwheel planting for Child Abuse Prevention Month and honored Governor Joe Lombardo with the Nevada Children's Champion Award for supporting the Safe Streets and Neighborhoods Act.
