COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows has announced an affordable summer camp that will run from June 9 to August 8 for kids ages 6 to 12 with activities such as arts and crafts, STEM projects and sports while teens ages 13 to 18 can attend free. Parents can enroll their children for a $20 annual membership and a $50 weekly fee with available sibling and military discounts at various local youth sites.  2NEWS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On April 12, a silver SUV slowed on I-580 at the Moana Lane exit and was hit from behind by a box truck, causing the vehicle to roll, eject two unbelted juveniles and kill one woman as Nevada State Police continue investigating the crash.  2NEWS

FINANCE NEWS

  • IRS data shows that Nevada taxpayers received an average refund of $3,643 in 2022, ranking the state fourth behind Florida, Texas and Wyoming with 70% of its 1.6 million returns getting refunds. The study also details county-level averages and notes that federal taxes are due today, though an automatic six-month extension is available if needed.  Reno Gazette Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Northern Nevada International Center reduced staff and struggled to support hundreds of refugees after federal funding for resettlement programs froze in January, and uncertainty over future dollars continues to affect its services. The cuts forced the center to cancel a workforce development program (Matching Grant) that helped skilled refugees join the workforce.  KUNR
  • County election officials are sending out notices to help voters confirm or update their address after cleanup efforts following the 2024 General Election. The Nevada Secretary of State reported that over 160,000 registrations were canceled and more than 37,000 voters were inactivated (as of April 10th) (per state and federal law).  2NEWS

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Residents in Reno will have a chance to watch the Lyrid meteor shower, which will peak late evening April 21 through dawn April 22 with dark skies and a half-moon that rises after 3:30 a.m.—allowing stargazers to see 10-20 fast meteors per hour and occasional fireballs. The shower runs from April 16 until April 26 and promises clear viewing conditions at local dark-sky sites.  Reno Gazette Journal
